Election Day, A National Holiday Is Observing Christ's Birth More Important than a Strong Democracy? |
|
This to me is the trump card to once and always make American Democracy successful. I don't understand why it's not being openly discussed? Our nation takes far less holiday time than all of the western democracies, but we can't prove our commitment to voting as a national holiday?

1. Biden had a good discussion |
|
on this with a voting activist. Eventually it might be good but it is not the key to the trouble. He believes the money game is. Shut that down and get people involved and trusting their democracy and all these things will become a lot more valuable than possible incentives to vote.

Like it or not, a majority of the country will say "yes."

3. It should be framed another way. |
|
Not as one holiday being "more important" than the other; it's not as if Election Day would replace Christmas.
If we have July 4th - Independence Day - as a federal holiday, isn't it at least as important to declare Election Day a national holiday as well? We celebrate our independence. Why not also observe our civic duty as citizens and make voting as easy for as many people as possible?

5. Well, the point I was trying to get across was that it's just as important... |
|
I'm a catholic, I wasn't "dissing" Christ's birth. I was pointing out that as the first major democracy, we should value election day equally.

6. I got your point, and I do agree with you. |
|
But I also see orangepeel's point, so taking Christmas out of the equation might work better.

Maybe rephrame it just on the basis of overall importance. Whatever that phrase might be it doesn't matter to me, but it should be a national holiday to vote.

4. I think they should just change election day |
|
to Saturday. If you give people a holiday, they will just leave town and not vote. Better yet, do all voting by mail. It would eliminate the damned exit polls, and the results would not be released until all the votes are counted.

7. Nah. People are more likely to leave town on an average Saturday |
|
than they are to leave town on Tuesday, assuming they have to work Monday and Wednesday.

8. I was assuming they meant the holiday would be on Monday. |
