McCain: deregulate healthcare, open up to markets since that worked great for financial industry
NYT's Paul Krugman points to a jaw dropping article in the current issue of Contingencies Magazine

http://krugman.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/09/19/mccain-on-banking-and-health/

OK, a correspondent directs me to John McCain’s article, Better Health Care at Lower Cost for Every American, in the Sept./Oct. issue of Contingencies, the magazine of the American Academy of Actuaries. You might want to be seated before reading this.

Here’s what McCain has to say about the wonders of market-based health reform:

"Opening up the health insurance market to more vigorous nationwide competition, as we have done over the last decade in banking, would provide more choices of innovative products less burdened by the worst excesses of state-based regulation."

So McCain, who now poses as the scourge of Wall Street, was praising financial deregulation like 10 seconds ago — and promising that if we marketize health care, it will perform as well as the financial industry!

1. Dayum, I gave up posting on this a couple of weeks ago since no one seemed
to be paying attention to anything more than Palin's lipstick.

7. Glad we're back on issues -- we need to make sure McCain doesn't get away with lies
like I'm such a reformist/regulator when his history up until "10 seconds ago" was exactly the opposite.

2. McCain was a leader in pushing for deregulation of financial institutions
we need some sound bites of him touting it - voting record isn't impactful enough

5. Every member of DU needs to read up on McCain's health care proposals
and let everyone know the details. The MSM is not discussing this at all. It looks like it's up to us to get the word out there.

Also people need to know that if their employer pays some portion of their health insurance costs, that amount will be considered taxable income under McCain's plan. It's a tax increase on millions of Americans.

6. and Obama should start saying that
they use the excuse that he wants to increase capital gains taxes to say that means that everyone with an IRA will get a tax increase so he wants to increases taxes on low- and middle-income people

well, it cuts both ways. Make the charge, let mccain splutter and fume and try to explain "oh, I don't want to tax your income, just your healthcare benefits!

A lot more people get employeer healthcare than own stock!
