DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Appearing in a state heavy with retirees, Sen. Barack Obama today criticized Sen. John McCain for supporting the privatization of Social Security, an attack timed to take advantage of the current instability in the stock market.
"Without Social Security half of elderly women would be living in poverty," Obama said. "But if my opponent had his way, the millions of Floridians who rely on it would've had their Social Security tied up in the stock market this week. How do you think that would have made folks feel?"
During a campaign stop on a university campus here, Obama said millions would have watched as the "market tumbled" and their "nest egg disappeared" before their eyes.
"Millions of families would've been scrambling to figure out how to give their mothers and their fathers, their grandmothers and grandfathers, the secure retirement that every American deserves," he said. "So I know Sen. McCain is talking about a 'casino culture' on Wall Street - but the fact is, he's the one who wants to gamble with your life savings and that is not going to happen when I am president of the United States."
Although the stock market was extremely volatile this past week, it did ultimately end down just 0.3 percent for the week.
Obama's campaign is also emphasizing the message with a television commercial called "Promise" that started running last week.
McCain's campaign responded by saying that the Arizona Republican is fully committed to protecting Social Security.
"John McCain is 100 percent committed to preserving Social Security benefits for seniors, and Barack Obama knows it," McCain spokesman Tucker Bounds said in a statement. "This is a desperate attempt to gain political advantage using scare tactics and deceit."
