An Alaskan (Wasilla) relative's take on Palin- a Repub view |
|
I have a very wealthy well respected lawyer Great Uncle in his 70's who has lived in Alaska for over 50 years and who has a home in the Wasilla area for 30 years. He is a die-hard Republican and no surprise, big game hunter and an independent, self reliant sort of guy who found frontier AK to his liking early on.
I will paraphrase his comments.
He knows Palin personally and while it would not have occurred to him to think of her as VP material, he thinks she will do well. He would be less concerned about her succession to the Presidency than Obama, whom he thinks has less executive experience than she. She can hire good advice.
(Washington) people will never understand her since she doesn't think like they do, not being a strict Repub or Dem--party doesn't mean much to her. What is seen on TV is the genuine article, not an act or persona. Many women in AK live the kind of life Palin lived before she became a politician. (His own dau shot her first moose at 7-8 years old). He says that she is definitely not the trailer court trash some are making her out to be.
Anne Kilkenny is a lifelong enemy of Palin's who has run off similar stories for 10 years. Despite the negative stories, Palin kept getting re-elected with ever bigger margins. Palin has a LOT of energy and demands loyalty from those who work for her. As far as the locals who demonstrated against Palin, he claims FDR could never carry the areas where HE lived either.
He says that the DNC flew reporters, investigators and attys to Anchorage and up to Wasilla and have to produce something, so are doing so mostly out of the whole cloth. He's never heard of any meth lab there in Wasilla--the reporters are nuts. ***
I would have preferred that he agree that she is a bad choice, but this is his opinion of her. These days it is hard to know who to trust when news will advantage some/disadvantage others politically...

3. Wasilla is really small |
|
In a small defense, he's wealthy, but he doesn't live *that* kind of lifestyle. He built his home by himself and lives fairly modestly, just on a big piece of land. Wasilla isn't much bigger than many upstate NY small towns and like I said, he knows the area well, being an outdoorsman and all. I'm not saying he might not be wrong, but it isn't like he lives a "Gated community" lifestyle.

17. Have you ever been to Wasilla or Alaska? |
|
Wasilla itself is small, but it is part of a larger community called the Matsu valley with a population of 80,000. The valley is quite spread out and people are private, with heavily wooded lots. There are tons of meth labs there and people that grow pot.
If you support Obama then tell your uncle why you support him. Tell him the truth about how much money Palin spent on her SUV and redecorating her office when she was mayor instead of buying rape kits for victims. Tell him the real deal about troopergate. You can also remind him that the McCain campaign has flown an army of operatives up here and has hijacked the governors office.

6. I kind of wondered who would be first with that sort of comment |
|
I decided that putting fingers in my ears because I don't like what someone says doesn't always serve. SOmetimes it is just spewed bull and not owrth the time. But in this case, it seems like there is more direct knowledge although colored R. In this case, it may help to understand why certain people think about Palin the way they do.

4. "She can hire good advice." |
|
She COULD hire good advice, but she won't. She'll hire sycophants and loyalists. Sound familiar?
BTW, I guess that good advice is only available for hire to repukes?

8. In 2000, Bush surrounded himself with "good advice" and "smart people" and stuff. |
|
How did that work out for everyone?

9. Not sure what you are implying... |
|
I brought that up because in local politics wealthier people often are more likely to rub shoulders/have interactions with higher ups in government and have direct dealings with them whether for good or ill. That's all.

14. That isn't necessarily true. |
|
I've been living here in Alaska since 1975. I'm not wealthy, but I've known personally the state chief Supreme Court justice for years, have played music with one of the Appeals Court justices, I've met personally three or four governors, I talked with Sarah Palin for a few minutes on election day in 2006. I've also known people doing multiple years in prison for some pretty terrible crimes. This is a small state. We all know each other, or know people who know people. Wealth doesn't mean anything.

I type legal transcripts for a living. I know of these arrests. There is also a HUGE amount of marijuana growing going on out in the Valley -- not that there's anything wrong with that -- but a person who doesn't realize that there are drug problems out there much more serious than some marijuana grows isn't paying attention.
