McCain Breaks His Record in August, Raising More Than $47 Million

By Michael Luo

Senator John McCain took in more than $9 million in the last three days of August after he named Gov. Sarah Palin of Alaska as his running mate, giving him a last-minute surge of cash that helped him to his best fund-raising month yet, according to new filings with the Federal Election Commission.

Mr. McCain collected more than $6.8 million alone on August 30, the day after the Palin announcement, making it by far his best fund-raising day of the month, according to the filing.

The report to the F.E.C. only itemizes contributions by donors that amount to more than $200, so it is likely that Mr. McCain’s haul after picking Ms. Palin was actually even higher than reported.

Mr. McCain brought in more than $47 million in August, and finished with $27 million in the bank that has since been transferred to the Republican National Committee and various state parties.

The report offered some details about how Mr. McCain spent his money in August, pouring out more than $40 million, up from the $32 million he spent the month before.

5. I think Obama's September haul will shatter all former fundraising records.
He's raising huge sums at these private receptions, not to mention the $10 mil that came in after Palin's hateful acceptance speech.
