I was at the University of Kansas football game tonight and got my face painted....... |

with the Obama Logo!
Had lots of fans yell "Obama" at me as I watched the game and walked around.
A few grumpy looking old men also gave me the evil eye.
The face painter did a great job. Said she had never done the Obama logo before. But luckily a friend had the logo on her shirt so she copied it.
Kansas is a back ass red state. Like not teaching evolution backass. But it is coming around a little.
Go Obama!!!

I pulled out a lot of my old KU buttons from the '70's. Most of them said stuff like "Big Blue Country", "Go Big Blue" and "Better Blue than Red" (a slap at Big 8 rivals Nebraska and Oklahoma U.).

5. You were in Lawrence, my favorite blue bubble |
|
Just moved from there earlier this year and can't wait to move back.
Barack. Chalk. Jayhawk. Go Big Blue!
fwiw, I got to watch the game. That's been a rarity since we moved. I heard the game was sold out. I wish I could dance like Reesing. We saw Mario and the Overtimes on the sidelines and an interview with Coach Self at the half.

8. I was born in Lawrence |

There are a lot of good people in Lawrence. You shouldn't worry about the townies. You have more to worry about from the people who come to the games from out of town.
I'm an old townie myself. My ancestors came from Massachusetts to Kansas to help found Lawrence as part of the Massachusetts Emigration Society's attempt to keep Kansas a state free from slavery (hence "Free State High School"). My ancestral manse (:eyes:) is a few blocks north of the KU campus on Alabama Street. When my grandpa was a little kid one of his playmates was Langston Hughes (who lived across the street with his grandmother). That's right, there were desegregated neighborhoods in Kansas long before Brown vs. Topeka Board of Education. Lawrence is light years ahead, in many respects, than the rest of Kansas.
As you might be able to tell, I'm pretty proud of my hometown and my alma mater. Then again, there is a building on campus that is named after one of my uncles (not to mention a street and a now-defunct club at the Alumni Association).
Lawrence is also a great party town. Think Mario Chalmers, Darryl Arthur and Aqib Talib. Then there were the parties that William S. Burroughs would throw. 'nuff said, if you know what I mean. ;) . And, if you get a chance, go to the Free State Brewery and have a John Brown Ale or an Ad Astra (or ask them to mix the two). Then follow that up with a dinner at La Parilla (near 8th and Mass) or La Familia (on New Hampshire, near the Bottleneck). Believe me, you won't be sorry.

I love it. Basketball season doesn't get here soon enough. I still love it.
Even though I am more of a Hawkeye than a Jayhawk!
But . . . Anyone but the 'Huskers.

I've been a basketball junkie since I was a kid. It's in my blood. Phogg asked my dad to try out for the team back in the late 50's. Dad did and ended up with Harp as his coach after they forced Phogg to take his mandatory retirement. Dad practiced a few times but dropped out because my mom got preggers with my older sis. (Grandma used to tell us that the only reason that Phogg asked dad to try out was because my great-aunt lived next door to him on Louisiana St. but my dad maintains he was a primo athlete. Either way, he did work out with Wilt on the freshman team.)
I'm also partial to the football team. My oldest brother played during the 70's and went to two bowl games. Right now, Magino's doing well with the football team. Hopefully we'll get to another bowl game this season and Reesing will get some respect along the way. Reesing has got great foot work.
fwiw, I dressed up as a Nebraska fan on Halloween one year. It was the same weekend Osborne and Huskers came to town (we got our asses KICKED). I wore jeans, a cowboy shirt (replete with pearl buttons that snapped), cowboy boots, a stalk of wheat and a big red hat with a white "N" on it. Whenever anyone asked, I told them I was a Nebraskan asshole.
