Here is a snippet of what we can expect with John McCain making the entire Iraq war all about the surge:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rHLfhOr55_UI think Obama should say that it notable that McCain likes to dwell on the surge, because it the one thing he supported regarding the Iraq war that did not turn out to be wrong or a disaster.
First, McCain supported the invasion on the ground that there were WMDs present and that Iraq presented an imminent threat, but this was not true. Obama opposed the invasion at a time when such opposition was not politically popular.
Second, McCain represented that the Iraq war would be an easy and short operation, which it wasn't. This was either poor judgment on McCain's part or he was misleading the American people.
Third, McCain strongly supported the President's conduct of the war, even saying that we should be surprised by the success. Likewise, despite his newfound criticism of the President's handling of the war, he campaigned on behalf of Bush in 2004, and voted with Bush over 90% of the time when he bothered to vote.
Fourth, only after things went horribly wrong, did he call for a surge.
Fifth, while additional Americans certainly helped, the real change was due Gen. Patreaus diplomacy. Contrary to McCain, we did not just kill our way to less violence with additional troops. Instead, with the Anbar awakening, Iraqis stopped cooperating with Al Queda.
Sixth, McCain has been resistant to any withdrawal, saying that he welcomed a 10 year or 1000 year presense in Iraq, and even PM Maliki has supported a timetable for withdrawal similar to that proposed by Obama.
