Poll question: Which image best describes your most likely course should...
Edited on Sun Sep-21-08 12:06 AM by Mr_Jefferson_24
...McCain somehow be installed as our next president?

And secondly, do you believe the vast majority of citizens would/will take the course of image number four (comply) under a McCain/Palin administration?

On edit: Second question, image four (not five).

20. Yes, compliance is hammered into us from a very early age...
...and it's not easy to shake the notion that authority is not to be challenged, but massive sustained non-compliance is probably the only viable way we could defeat these illegitimate fascist thugs without international help.

19. If my college students are indicative
of the average citizen, and I have no reason to believe that they are not, they won't notice that it was stolen. If told, they won't believe it. If they do believe it, they will think it was justified.

Recently, for Constitution Day ( Did you know that all higher educational institutions where students get any federal funding are required by law to have programs presented where students are educated on the Constitution on September 17th?) I was part of performance piece on the constitution - if the faculty present are any indication, it was pretty hilarious/frightening ( set up like a carnival/game show - it included Habeas Corpus Wheel of Fortune, Enhanced Interrogation Jeopardy, etc.). The problem was that the students had no idea as to what was going on. This was then followed by a serious and fascinating panel composed of faculty from poli sci and history. The Q & A afterwards really helped, but even after, I had the uneasy feeling that far too many of the students were under the impression that "it can't happen here."

I voted 3/yes, but I don't think that they will see it as compliance. They simply won't notice.

21. I'm getting too old to fight with anything except my brain.
Body is in bad shape. In the 70's the protesters learned that the government was armed and willing to use it, it is only worse now. If I thought I could make a difference I would fight, but my skills are not physical ones, more software and electrical engineering. I will probably find a safe place/country and do what I can from there.

22. I didn't necessarily mean to imply armed or violent resistance...
...with the "fight" option. There are other ways to resist oppression. I favor massive non-violent non-compliance, but it's not something that's easy to organize, and to be effective it must be sustained.

24. They would almost certainly use violence to make examples...
...out of some of us hoping to scare the masses back into compliance, and that would be the toughest test for the resistance -- to stay non-compliant and nonviolent even after government hired thugs injure and kill some of us.

Well, a McCain/Palin White House would probably prompt me not to pay any more attention or put any more effort toward U.S. politics either -- their installation would prove our present system is a total sham.

42. I will quietly live out my life, finding joy and beauty in the natural world, and treat
the people around me with compassion and loving kindness.

My sons are adults, I taught them as best I could to question authority, to think for themselves, to value art and beauty and nature and truth.

I will live my remaining years as quietly and invisibly as any Russian peasant under the Soviet Union.

46. Run as far and fast as I can.
To Vietnam, Thailand or China to teach advanced conversational English and some Anglo-American law after I pick up the local language. I've fucking had it. I have lived through Nixon, Reagan, Bush I, Clinton (at best, a useful enabler of neocon/neoliberal forms of economic fascism) and this lunatic Chimp and his Palpatine puppetmaster. In the immortal words of Colonel Sherman T. Potter of the 4077th M*A*S*H, "I'm too old for this kind of crap. I think I tore my shorts."

I am not a young man anymore, though I am not yet an old man. I suffer from Asperger's Syndrome and depression, which make me unemployable in this country as anything but a menial despite being a classmate, and sectionmate of Michelle Obama at Harvard Law. I've been unemployed or ridiculously underemployed for most of the last twenty years because I am cold and logical, not friendly, superficial, and engaging. I am what I am, and in the professional world people love my work and recoil at me. When I contemplate my remaining alloted years on this earth, I want to be surrounded by balanced, Confucian culture, delicious and indigenous food, beautiful and well-educated women. Indifference to politics in my adopted home as long as the let me teach and bash America for being imbecilic, greedy, and riddled with the stupidest religious movements in the history of the planet.

I HAVE HAD ENOUGH, and if you want to know why, find an article by The Great Matt Taibbi called "Jesus Made Me Puke." Any country in which there is a substantial number of people like these is determined to die of its own fucking clinical and pathological idiocy. Hey, morons, I hope Jeebus can pay your mortgage, educate your kids (Good Dog, what am I saying, these people recoil from real education like vampires from garlic) and give you a McJob. Too many Americans are simply too dumb to live.

Edited on Tue Sep-23-08 06:08 AM by tedoll78
Michael Caine's character had a lovely, secluded place in the woods. Regardless of who wins, I'm already taking steps towards #2. The acreage is purchased; the house plans are being drawn.

I can't leave the country; I can't leave my Mom, Dad, sister, and others behind. :(
