Who's the elitist again? Guess how many cars McCain has.
Report: McCain Has 13 Cars, Obama 1
September 21, 2008 9:57 AM

ABC News' Tahman Bradley Reports: After the brouhaha over Sen. John McCain's struggle to recall how many houses he owns, Newsweek wondered how many cars might be parked at the presidential candidate's multiple homes.

The weekly newsmagazine checked vehicle registration records for both McCain and Sen. Barack Obama and found that when you include the candidates' spouses, McCain owns 13 cars, Obama 1.

McCain has a 2004 Cadillac CTS, a 2007 half-ton Ford pickup truck, a 1960 Willys Jeep, a 2008 Jeep Wranger among other American cars. He's got a few foreign vehicles in his fleet as well, owning a 2005 Volkswagen convertible and a 2001 Honda sedan.

The only vehicle registered in Obama's name is a 2008 Ford Escape hybrid.

McCain's wife, Cindy, an heiress to a beer distribution company, has her name on 11 vehicles but actually only drives one car - a Lexus with the personal plates MS BUD

1. I don't think this is effective. Collecting cars isn't like having 10 houses
Jay Leno owns more cars that McCain.. (I think)

I hate to say it, but I dislike McCain a bit less now that I know he has a 1960 Willys

25. We'll never know how effective it is.
We'll never isolate the effect this one revelation has from the huge mountain of symptoms of McCain elitism.

21. In my neighborhood, everybody has at least six cars
Of course, four of them are up on blocks in the front yard being parted out to keep the other two running. Then the shells are hauled to the metal recyclers to sell for scrap when the rent is due.

6. Certainly says something to me, between someone who owns 13 damn cars an another person..
...who owns only ONE and it's a hybrid. It's the difference between a greedy, floating-in-money, gas-guzzling, environment-hating, oil-company-loving old fart, and someone who has common sense, doesn't live (or do anything) to excess, is progressive and reasonable, and cares about the environment.

Easy to say I'd more likely want the latter person for President. It's a no-brainer.

3. This is all part of building the case that McCain is an elitist, out of touch with those who can
barely get by in these trying times. 10 houses? 13 cars? Sounds like an ordinary, every day guy to me.

5. Doesn't he know you can trade those things in?
I understand keeping the Willys, but why would he hang on to a 2001 Honda?

7. Wait a minute...
Am I reading this right that John owns 13 and his wife owns 11 for a total of 24, or is it 2 for John and 11 for Cindy for a total of 13 between them?

...really have nothing to do with the campaign... Then again, that's coming from a bazillonaire's daughter... :eyeroll:

14. Elitism has nothing to do with how money, cars, houses one has.
We miss the boat. Elitism is an attitude. "I am more educated,
more knowledge and therefore know what is best for you." Intelletual
snobbishness.

18. My neighbor in NH was a regular working guy, and he had 13 cars
Of course, only one of them worked and the rest were parked in the front yard with weeds growing up around the wheels -- along with three old snowblowers, a washing machine, and an old couch.

Do you think that's what McCain's house is like?

20. Hey, I'm just glad to see a little investigating. Can you imagine them doing this to Bush
in '04? They wouldn't have dared.

I realize it's not Watergate but it's slightly encouraging for a change.
