How to combat this? Obama is racist... any good suggestions
I have gotten this twice just this weekend. People telling me that Oprah is racist (umm ok lol) and she endorses Obama. That Obama is racist (and no this is not from the fake email, I asked).

One lady today told me she could tell by listening to him talk and that you are who you surround yourself with and Oprah is racist and then she said also a comedian (but couldn't remember his name lol) and also cited his Church

I had my brother tell me the same thing (go thru the whole Church, and Oprah thing).

I really didn't have a comeback which is totally odd because normally I am so good at that. I don't expect to change their minds but I don't think Obama is racist at all (for one he is too intelligent) I would like something to shoot back to them that would at least shut them up.

I had thought about maybe mentioning how horrible McCain's track record is with women.. I didn't know what to say though to combat Obama is racist. Have you gotten this? And what did you say?

I would ask though, what evidence they have to support the notion that Obama is racist. They are the ones making the claim. If they are so convinced they should be able to back up the statement with some examples and facts.

12. Well like I said it was his Church and Oprah lol but I wanted
a good comeback. I know I read one about when you come across someone who says they can't vote for a black president to say "he is half white so vote for the white part" which I thought was funny and I think would make the person who said they wouldn't vote for him look stupid. I'm looking for something like that.

If I've already came across it twice this weekend I would like to have a comeback or food for thought.

I can't imagine I am the only one that has had someone say this. Maybe I should check out youtube for the View shows.. Lord know Elizabitch whined about his Church enough (oddly enough she doesn't mention Palin's Church, why doesn't the media say anything about that??)

66. This is why so many Republicans can't pass a SAT or an ACT
test to get into a decent college, reading comprehension. Here's what your link said:

And then Oprah pointed out that now that she's Oprah, she has "all these white people" working for her, and that in fact there's only one black person on the staff. Way to turn the tables, girl.

Do you see the word "slaves" being said there? Or is that what you and your friends believe employees are?

79. look you need to tell them to study history
African American history so they can have an understand of what goes on in the AA community and the road traveled. What Oprah was simply doing is to show the difference in America then and America now. Before AA have slim to no rights, the American dream did not apply to AA. Through struggle and time America has grown so that Oprah a black woman can be head of a company employing white people and not the other way around as it was always before.
I am getting tired of all this race talk. Barack is black, being black is not a disease. Being black does not equal to hating whites. In a speech on race Obama tried to move us beyond skin color but racism is raring it's ugly head. Dammit.

These people are not making an argument. They are just making shit up to justify their own bigotry. I guess you could ask them why a racist would have so many white people running his campaign and why he would pick super-white Joe Biden as his running mate.

What I would do is bash McCain as much as possible and try to get them to vote for Barr or Nader or not at all. I doubt they would vote for any black person under any circumstances.

has already revealed three things:

1) they don't really understand the definition of the word racist

2) they are ignorant

3) they are racists looking for an excuse not to vote for Obama but too ashamed to admit their own racism, they cling to this shabby, transparent and ill-fated claim

They can always go to factcheck.org which has debunked this whole notion. clearly, the racists in the party are john McCain and Sarah Palin. Anyone who doesn't know that isn't interested in facts and really does not care about racism and is only using it to justify their own real racism against Obama. Pretty pathetic.

I would suggest that people who say certain Aftican Americans are racist without a single example of a certain deed or an exact quote of something they said that was bigoted, then they are guilty of bearing false witness.

He's half white, half black. His grandmother and his uncle are both white, his uncle served in WWII under Patton (correct me on the details...)

If anything, Obama has more experience than 99% of us in dealing with white-on-black racism and black-on-white racism, and has enough wisdom to understand the pervasiveness and insidiousness of bigotry in our society. He's the exact opposite of racist.

50. Regardless of what other people here have said...
the sole reason people may think Obama is racist IS NOT NECESSARILY that they are racist themselves. The Repubs have a mammoth misinformation campaign going on, and some people will fall for it because they aren't exposed to anything else without realizing it. I ran into a coworker who has this problem myself just Friday. She thinks Obama is racist because of his church, because the media went well out of its way to make him out to be. I explained to her that if you listen to the whole sermon they quote, and not just the soundbite, it is clear that Wright is not attacking whites, but instead is making commentary about the corporate-controlled attitude of the US. That's how I personally handled it.

I think this issue is an important one, one which is more important than we give it credit for being. We can't and shouldn't simply assume that anyone who falls for the propaganda is stupid or evil. There's a lot of people that limit themselves to particular messages without even realizing it, by the people they relate with and their surroundings. There's also a lot of people that are not in a position to get exposure to other voices at all. We don't know for sure when we see someone who believes different things than we do what the circumstances of why they do actually are. Assuming that they are lost to reason out of hand won't help get our message across - it will only increase the divisiveness that plagues this country.

Not sure if you can help people like that or reason with them. Obama is half white. His children are 1/4 white, his sister is Asian. People who try and paint Obama as racist are delusional at best. Pity them, you cannot reason with them.

Sorry about your brother, we all have those family members. What can you do. I don't think it is legal to lock them up in the attic anymore.

But seriously, nothing you can really come back to with people who are that purposely obtuse.

62. I didn't know Oprah was suppose to be a racist
don't know that story.

Ah the church thing though, the untold story of the church.
About the racist part you could ask the white people who go there like Rev Jane Fisler Hoffman
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-joZ20zHzuE
Here is a more recent comment from her (post Weight-mania)
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=jane+fissler+hoffman&btnG=Google+Search
" I have spoken with several reporters about our experience at Trinity but am never referred to in print, I presume because my experience is POSITIVE! Milt and I are members there very intentionally because it is a Christ centered, Spirit filled congregation where the worship is powerful; the preaching is spiritually insightful and prophetic; the welcome to all is warm and embracing; mission is both local and global ; tithing is encouraged and expected; members bring and read their Bibles; and disciples are nurtured in the faith…Do I agree with every word from Rev. Wright's mouth? No. (No more than I agree with every word my husband says! ) But I have seen and experienced the dominant direction of his whole ministry which is toward love and justice and peace for all people in the name of Jesus Christ. That is what I respect."

The original article of this is too old to be available but it was copied in a blog.
http://blog.qusan.com/2008/03/rev-wright-white-member.html
It is from a white male member. Years ago his fiancee broke engagement because of him being white. (She is black) Wright called her in... Here is part
He spent four hours explaining his reaction to her decision. Racial divisions were unacceptable, he said, no matter how great or prolonged the pain that caused them. God would not want us to assess or make decisions about people based on race. The world could make progress on issues of race only if people were prepared to break down barriers that were much easier to let stand.

Rev. Wright was pretty persuasive; he presided over our wedding a few months later. In the years since, I have watched in utter awe as Wright has overseen and constructed a support system for thousands in need on the South Side that is far more impressive and effective than any governmental program possibly could approach. And never in my life have I been welcomed more warmly and sincerely than at Trinity. Never.

The minutes of clips from a few sermons sounded bad. People who knew him didn't know him that way...not even those who heard the other sermons. Really he wasn't known as some kook (before) and the church had a good reputation. Many people tried to bring that up on TV and were ignored or shot down.
For instance MSNBC's Tamaron Hall who said on Hardball April 30
"this is a type of church when you move to Chicago and you‘re a young African-American, you‘re often told, Listen, there are two churches you probably need to join. It‘s Apostolic Church on the South Side of Chicago, or Trinity Church also on the South Side. There you can meet people. You can network and kind of get your feet in the water of Chicago and learn.... the life of Chicago. And that was my experience, and I went—I can tell you, Chris, I never heard this type of language. I‘ve called a dozen or more people who regularly attend this church, and they say they didn‘t hear this type of language. But the tape is out there. We know it exists."

She was cut short by Chris Matthews saying "I find that hard to believe

Flavia Colgan, a columnist, was telling Larry King that a lot of local reporters from the Chicago papers and many other members of the church were shocked by the clips of Wright because they said "this is not the pastor that we knew."
The response? King snapped at her that she didn't answer the question
http://transcripts.cnn.com/TRANSCRIPTS/0804/29/lkl.01.html

Or Cynthia Tucker who said on "This Week" March 23rd that her brother has attended, his friends are members and it's pretty mainstream conventional, nothing like the clips. That the sermons are sort of "Pull yourself up, family responsibility. (George changed the subject)

But here is the BIG untold story.
Jay Carney of Time on the same show who said they had reporters going through all the old sermons. years and years worth, and they hadn't found anything else controversial so there wasn't really a story.
Not a story?
The truth is not a story?

What if the truth got out. Obama was proven to not be at the few sermons the clips were from. Obama himself had said he had not heard Wright speaking that way and people who went there and the Time journalist finding "no story" seems to validate that but since all that was ignored or untold people can assume he was lying.

So people can say "He listened to hate for all these years" and that is not true.

Some people would still decry Obama as a racist/terrorist/empty suit/whatever insult because they want to believe whatever bad thing there is about him.

There is NO reason to think Obama is racist. Poor guy has been in a racially tense campaign before when he ran for Congress in 2000...for being TOO WHITE. For hanging out with white friends, having white supporters and backers, talking too "white, his Harvard education. He was even called a white man in black face by an opponent and the race was considered "the professor vs the black panther" People said if he got to Congress he wouldn't fight for the good of blacks but for whites.
The church of course was not an issue because it was very well thought of, as was Wright.
Here is one article on it
Before Obama Was a Favorite Son
http://www.realclearpolitics.com/articles/2008/04/before_obama_was_a_favorite_so.html

I doubt this is much help. If people are willing to easily believe a man raised by his white mother and grandparents, who still faithfully visits his grandmother, who is gracious with his white colleagues, who has many white friends, many white staff, who is himself as white as he is black is racist it might be hard to change their mind...

Unless it really is the church stuff. The media was horrible on showing minutes of clips from 35 years of sermons as the whole story. I've never seen such imbalance on a big story, ever.

68. Ask them if they really believe what they are saying
The concept is a fake.

AAs are a minority, an AA cannot win the election without white support nor maintain any mandate without some white support = a black "racist" such as the person claiming it understands it, cannot be mainstream or be elected President at this point.

The idea that a black president would favor the blacks only is ridiculous on the face of it. They are projecting, too - they figure that's what white Presidents are for. Do they approve therefore of white Presidents treating the nonwhite people unfairly? That's what they are implying.

Transcript of Obama's sppech on racism:

http://www.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/03/18/obama.transcript/

Some choice tidbits:

I chose to run for the presidency at this moment in history because I believe deeply that we cannot solve the challenges of our time unless we solve them together -- unless we perfect our union by understanding that we may have different stories, but we hold common hopes; that we may not look the same and we may not have come from the same place, but we all want to move in the same direction -- towards a better future for our children and our grandchildren.

........................

I am the son of a black man from Kenya and a white woman from Kansas. I was raised with the help of a white grandfather who survived a Depression to serve in Patton's Army during World War II and a white grandmother who worked on a bomber assembly line at Fort Leavenworth while he was overseas.

I've gone to some of the best schools in America and lived in one of the world's poorest nations. I am married to a black American who carries within her the blood of slaves and slaveowners -- an inheritance we pass on to our two precious daughters.

I have brothers, sisters, nieces, nephews, uncles and cousins, of every race and every hue, scattered across three continents, and for as long as I live, I will never forget that in no other country on Earth is my story even possible.

It's a story that hasn't made me the most conventional candidate. But it is a story that has seared into my genetic makeup the idea that this nation is more than the sum of its parts -- that out of many, we are truly one.

77. Oprah put her career on line, not her race
Since coming to America and living in Harlem and working in Beth Sty Brooklyn I repeatedly noticed-- even among the blacks in my brother's family-- that openly "mixed" blacks are rejected for much the same reason as they are by whites. Obama greatest value is the maturity he developed evolving from a boy made of many broken American pieces to a man made whole by resolving the contradictions created by all these pieces, one against the other, bringing them together as he would us Americans. As a refugee who grew up not as a kid but a small being forced to adopt and adapt to a new culture and language every year almost, I have a small sense-- but small at best-- of what Obama went through. Black women seem to be very strict in evaluating black men-- especially when successful women-- and seem to be weary of black men until proven superior beyond any doubt. This I found to be the case over and over again in my life in NYC. That Oprah put her career on the line standing for Obama is proof that she found in this "mongrel" incredible traits, all united into one whole amazing man-- she must have seen him as a MALE ideal and race was no longer an issue of prejudice even for her, a black feminist.

We must look at the NYTimes magazine today to the story of a recently new white law prof at Harvard who decided that to teach law he would follow the example of his "mongrel" prof, Barak Obama, and teach law with a clear eye ON BOTH SIDES OF THE STORY....That is Obama's greatest "spin-off" skill from uniting the contradictions within himself.

There are indications, as I often met, of Dems who admit privately that they could never accept a black man in the White House. But, as a former-Republican and Conservative leader, I still have many Republican friends who privately tell me that McCain-Palin is like your finger going through toilet paper when you try to rub clean too hard. I REALLY BELIEVE THAT THERE IS A REVERSE-BRADLEY EFFECT AT HAND: THEY WILL TELL THE POLLSTERS THAT THEY WANT MCCAIN TO HIDE THE FACT THAT.... "OH MY GOODNESS".... THEY ARE VOTING NOT ONLY FOR A DEM FOR PRES BUT A BLACK ONE AT THAT!

McCain is proof that the Republicans, as a Party, committed to anything it takes to win over "them dumb rednecks for Jesus," as Rove was quoted to say. This may backfire. What we as Dems must do is make sure that our Viagra Dems understand that McCain is as phony as their erection. When they see how catastrophic McCain is to their future, ONLY THEN will they begin to look at Obama as a man running for the White House and take into consideration his attributes other than race.

Oprah payed so great a price and, as a black American woman, had to be too jaded to stick her head out for Obama...She saw something that very many Republicans also saw.

I SWEAR TO YOU, NOW MY FELLOW DEMOCRATS, THAT MANY REPUBLICANS ARE AMERICANS FIRST AND RACE BE DAMNED, TELLING THEIR REPUBLICAN FRIENDS: "IT'S ALRIGHT, YES YOU CAN VOTE FOR OBAMA....FOR THE SAKE OF AMERICA."

In 2000 I thought GW Bush the Second Coming.....Over 7 1/2 years, thanks to by dumb illusion, I watched my American native kids picking up my past trek as a refugee half way around the world to reach this "Paradise of Freedom" continue in reverse, wanting not to raise their American born kids in an America that has been so stupid, avaricious and lying, run by a bunch of incompetent "entrepreneur" frauds. Until now I had no case to make for: don't you dare leave, stay and fight for change. Luckily they stuck and ALL of them, including the Wall Street broker, are for Obama. They trust him as one of their own even though all white, not on race but as one of their own generation for whom race no longer counts.

Oprah also saw that when you look in Obama's eyes and open your ears to his words, after reading his books, you too realize, there may be a lot of issues there, but race is not one of them. So Oprah-- decided, probably-- I'm going to act as if MY race and his RACE are totally besides the point and I'm going to bet that MOST AMERICANS will think that way too. That's not so crazy, in my view, because I know VERY MANY Republicans think that way. Your problem is the artificially erect Dems.

81. Laugh at them.
Desperate Reich wingers have resuscitated the Rev. Wright business and almost universally refer to Trinity as a "racist church" now. I heard Pat Buchanan call it that on Rachel's show last week; I've seen it pop up a few places on line.

This is laughable. This is pathetic. If you're really so frightened of a church that emphasizes black pride, you're not much of a man. Or a woman.

When they can go "LOOK A BLACK PERSON IS BEING RACIST TOO, LOOOOOOOK!!!"

It's right up there "How come there is a BET? If there was WET that'd be racist."

The people that say this kind of stuff have never been denied anything because of minorities, that's the part that cracks me up. It's just 5 year old "life's not fair!" mentality.

But the white half or black half comeback sounded the best, lol.
