Did this financial debacle effectively shelve Universal Health Care and other needful things? |
|
I have been noodling on how Obama could reject the bailout without seeming like either an obstructionist or a financial management neophyte or simply using it as an attack vehicle.
Here are some ideas.
We need to make it a loan fund rather than a bailout and we need a repayment schedule so that the american people and future generations are not screwed.
We need a 1.5% tax on stock transactions that will compensate the goverment for the interest we are goiong to have to pay to foriegn entitites.
We need to take a rational approach to homeowners that are at risk of foreclosures. No bailouts. no freebies...but we need to let people move to fixed rate loans.
Once things are stabilized
We need strict controls and oversight in one agency and one committee that insures that the financial managers are acting responsibly on their risk.
There is a price to be paid for this greed and that bill should not be paid for by the american taxpayer.
He probably need to avoid attacking McCain on this. But it shouild be a all out assult on the GOP leadership bof falling asleep at the switch.

6. because this is probably one issue where he needs to look more presidential than partisan |
|
Its not that he can't attack McCain it is simply that the best he could do is do the blame thing and I don't think that gets him much more votes in swing states. But a populist message that appeals to the middle class swinf voter is very important in swing states,

2. The bailout must be rejected, all $1 trillion of it. |
|
If the bailout goes through, there won't be any money for health care and other social programs supported by Democrats and other progressives.
The same people that demanded $700-1000 billions to bailout Wall Street will balk at $100 million for health care.

4. The dems had better not fold on this. We must follow Reich's plan. |
|
Taxpayers need to own the amount that we invest just like any stock purchaser. This enough is way too much! We must flood Congress tomorrow with calls full of threats of recrimination if they fold this time. I personally have had it. The dems had better stand tall for once.

5. The Republicans sure hope so |

Just another chapter in The Shock Doctrine...this goes right to the Republican playbook. We have to bailout our buddies...sorry there's no money for the other 300 million americans who might need some help.
