What do you call it when McCain brings a soldier's dog tags to 60 Minutes interview?
Edited on Sun Sep-21-08 08:56 PM by NYC_SKP
He brought to the interview a small white envelop, which he then opens to reveal the chain with tags attached with picture of the Killed in Action Soldier.

And says, "this is what being a president is about."

What kind of low is that? Is there even a word?

EDIT: Beyond anger, this hurts my heart. My heart is hurting for what this man is doing.

81. These lyrics?
(and welcome to DU) :hi:

Please allow me to introduce myself
I'm a man of wealth and taste
I've been around for a long, long year
Stole many a man's soul and faith

And I was 'round when Jesus Christ
Had his moment of doubt and pain
Made damn sure that Pilate
Washed his hands and sealed his fate

Pleased to meet you
Hope you guess my name
But what's puzzling you
Is the nature of my game

I stuck around at St. Petersburg
When I saw it was a-time for a change
Killed the czar and his ministers
Anastasia screamed in vain

I rode a tank
Held a general's rank
When the blitzkrieg raged
And the bodies stank

Pleased to meet you
Hope you guess my name, oh yeah
Ah, what's puzzling you
Is the nature of my game, ah yeah

(whoo whoo, whoo whoo)
I watched with glee
While your kings and queens (whoo whoo)
Fought for ten decades (whoo whoo)
For the gods they made (whoo whoo)

I shouted out, (whoo whoo)
"Who killed the Kennedys?" (whoo whoo)
When after all (whoo whoo)
It was you and me (whoo whoo)

Let me please introduce myself (whoo whoo)
I'm a man of wealth and taste (whoo whoo)
And I laid traps for troubadours (whoo whoo)
Who get killed before they reached Bombay (whoo whoo, whoo whoo)

Pleased to meet you (whoo whoo)
Hope you guessed my name, (whoo whoo) oh yeah (whoo whoo)
But what's puzzling you (whoo whoo)
Is the nature of my game(whoo whoo), oh yeah, get down, baby (whoo whoo)
(whoo whoo, whoo whoo)
(whoo whoo)
(whoo whoo)
(whoo whoo) ..........

Pleased to meet you (whoo whoo)
Hope you guessed my name, (whoo whoo) oh yeah (whoo whoo)
But what's confusing you (whoo whoo)
Is just the nature of my game (whoo whoo) um yeah (whoo whoo)

Just as every cop is a criminal (whoo whoo)
And all the sinners saints (whoo whoo)
As heads is tails (whoo whoo)
Just call me Lucifer (whoo whoo)
'Cause I'm in need of some restraint (whoo whoo)

So if you meet me (whoo whoo)
Have some courtesy (whoo whoo)
Have some sympathy, (whoo whoo) and some taste (whoo whoo)
Use all your well-learned politesse (whoo whoo)
Or I'll lay your(whoo whoo) soul to waste,(whoo whoo), um yeah (whoo whoo)

74. From the official CBS transcript:
The first line below was the voice over set up for the exchange that follows, played while they showed a clip of a woman handing him something out on the tarmac.
There were just a few people present there, she had to have been granted special permission to get anywhere near him. It was a set up at least that far, and probably far more.
How coincidental and fortuitous that she was there in time for the sixty minutes interview, and that sixty minutes had the video and knew about the envelope.
CBS is so very helpful!

(Voiceover) In the wars that the U.S. is fighting today, McCain supports sending around 12,000 more troops to Afghanistan - another surge. He was reminded of the toll in Afghanistan before our interview when a woman at the airport gave him an envelope.

McCain: Just landed at the airport a couple hours ago. Woman was there. She handed me this envelope. Says, "My son, Staff Sergeant Patrick Lee Leibert, KIA, 21, June 2006, Afghanistan. Quote, please remember and support our troops in Afghanistan. God bless you. Cheryl Patrick Pelley: KIA, killed in action.

McCain: Inside of it, of course, is the dog tag with Patrick's picture on it. That's what being President of the United States is all about.

My thought was that if it was not a prop and indeed was given to him by a mother, he probably threw out the big freaking note that was wrapped around the tag that read:

I'm sorry, I question the truthfulness of his story. Would a parent really give their son's dog tags to a politician? I sure as hell wouldn't! My husband's dog tags don't have his picture on them. I admit he's been out of the service several years, so they may have pictures on them now. Hopefully our DUers in the armed forces can weigh in on this. But, I'd like to know if any of you would give your son's dog tags away. I am just stunned.

77. So I guess the campaign could order those, make a set for mom and one for
her to give to him, personally, at the airport before his interview, with cameras ready so that they could include the visual in the show tonight.

Or else it was all just dumb luck and coincidence.

She had to have some kind of security clearance to be one of only five or ten people out there on the tarmac, if you saw the video.

72. I believe he is exploiting that young life for his own personal gain...
His success to win the Presidency has nothing to do with the valor of that young soul....That is awful....John McCain is a scumbag.

Obviously a republican household allowed him to exploit their sons loss, but if that young hero knew what was going on, would he like that.....we will never know....and shame on his family.

When Mr. McShame does this, he represents 5,000 Americans who have lost their lives too? All soldiers are united. I bet the majority of those hero's would be infuriated.

John McCain betrays himself as a hero because of his imprisonment in Viet Nam. To put it bluntly, if he would have been on the top of his graduating class instead of the bottom, he wouldn't have been shot down over Hanoi.

I guess she feels strongly about McCain being elected, and if this is a way to help her feel that her son's death wasn't in vain I'm glad it helps her, but... I don't know, some things are too painful to be used in a photo op. I would have thought so, anyway.

Doesn't she realize that her son very well might not have died if people and resources hadn't been taken out of Afghanistan for an unnecessary war that McCain supports? She allowed her grief to be used by a man who contributed to it. Very sad.

99. Does anyone know when the 60 minutes interview was taped?
MCInSane used these same dog tags at a rally in WI on the 18th.

http://thecaucus.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/09/18/mccain-reveals-dog-tags-of-dead-soldier/

Mr. McCain said that a woman had greeted him at the airport in Wisconsin and handed him an envelope.

“Then I got back on the bus and I saw this envelope, and the envelope was from Cheryl Lee Patrick from Ladysmith, Wis.,’’ he said. “And on the front of the envelope it says: ‘To Senator John McCain. My son, Staff Sgt. Patrick Lee Lybert, K.I.A. June 21, 2006, Afghanistan. And then the note goes on to say: please remember and support our troops in Afghanistan. God bless you, Cheryl Patrick.”

“And then I opened up the envelope,’’ Mr. McCain said, doing so on stage as a clinking sound was heard over the sound system, with many in the audience of the arena gasping audibly, “and there was the dog tags.’’
