Fairbanks Republican Mayor endorses Obama

I am sure that this has been posted before in DU while travelling but if I missed it maybe somebody else missed it too.

Besides it will give us something to read while we wait for the next thread urging us to save the PBS 40 million vote poll

Mayor Whitaker endorses Obama

FAIRBANKS — Republican Mayor Jim Whitaker has said he is endorsing Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Barack Obama.

“My goal is to let Republicans have a clear understanding that their right to vote should not be restricted by any party affiliation,” the borough mayor said. He said the economic and political challenges facing the state and country are broader than political parties alone can address and suggested Republicans should consider crossing party lines by focusing on the strongest candidate this year.

Obama spokesman Jeff Giertz on Monday called Whitaker the “highest-profile” Republican in the state to endorse the Democratic senator.

Whitaker, a former state lawmaker, said a comparison of Obama and Republican Sen. John McCain — neither of whom he has personally met — leads him to believe Obama has the stronger “intellectual capacity” and a greater ability to manifest it. He said his endorsement should not be viewed as one of the Democratic Party, noting that absent criminal convictions of Republican Sen. Ted Stevens or Rep. Don Young, he would be supporting their respective re-election campaigns.

Whitaker, who as a politician has often focused on energy issues, said he sensed an open-minded approach in Obama’s campaign toward traditional, alternative and renewable energy issues that can benefit resource-rich Alaska.

5. You're dang right he's brave.
She's coming back, and she'll have all the names on a list. She'll be one of the most dangerous predators in Alaska.

Unless someone starts a recall petition on her.

8. Sounds like she HAS made a lot of enemies
Either this guy is not running again or he thinks a lot of people in his base of voters might feel the same way. It would be hilarious if Obama ended up winning the state or even made the race a close one.

18. It sure is!
Big slap in the governors face

And his comment that he thinks only Obama has the "intellectual capacity" to be President is him just rubbing it in. :)

Now that he can be added to the what, five THOUSAND Repubs who have endorsed Obama, folks will stop bitching about the eight Democrats who've decided to switch to McCain including Lady Whositsface.
