McCain Owns a Honda Sedan and a VW Convertible -- Despite Having Claimed to Always Buy American Cars
http://voices.washingtonpost.com/the-trail/2008/09/21/13_cars_for_the_mccains--and_n.html?hpid=topnews

First it was his seven houses. Now, Sen. John McCain has to explain his fleet of 13 cars.

According to a Newsweek item published online today, McCain and his wife, Cindy, own more than a dozen cars, including three electric bubble-shaped cars, called GEM's that the magazine says are popular in retirement communities.

But the ones getting him into trouble are the foreign-made cars. According to the magazine, the McCains own a Honda sedan and a Volkswagen convertible -- despite having once claimed to always buy American-made cars.

In an interview with Detroit station WXYZ-TV, McCain bragged that "I've bought American literally all my life and I'm proud." That was after explaining to the anchor that his daughter, Meghan, bought her own Toyota Prius.

UAW President Ron Gettelfinger, in a conference call organized by the Democratic party, blasted McCain on Sunday for not being truthful with voters.

"When he's in the midwest, he tells voters he supports the industry," Gettelfinger told reporters. "That's really a nice campaign line. But it turns out that John McCain wasn't being straight with the people of Detroit."

Gettelfinger cast McCain as an enemy of auto workers for supporting trade deals that he said would ship jobs overseas.

"We need a president who's committed to rebuilding the auto industry in America, not a president who buys foreign cars and then falsifies the truth when he thinks auto workers aren't watching," he said.

The magazine reported that the only car in McCain's name is a Cadillac. The others are in Cindy McCain's name. Another Japanese car -- a Lexus that Cindy McCain drives with the plates 'Ms BUD' -- is registered to the beer distribution company that she heads.

3. Honda builds in the US...
...and starting in '09, VW will again. (They built here in the 70's and '80s)

The auto business is the most globalized business in the world.

10. It's the hypocrisy of faux patriotism.
He claims to have bought American his whole life, and it's just not true.

BTW, I drive a 1990 Ford Ranger, with 300,000 miles on it.

11. And I a 1995 CHEVY Cavalier now (29MPG combined, your mileage may vary)
Chevy my entire life (first was a 59 Impala). My ex now has a Mustang, one of the reasons we didn't agree. But 300K that is just too cool.

I can get on the soapbox and yell at McDole, and let him show us his insurance cards or old registrations to PROVE he owned only Domestics. I still have the paperwork from my '62 Impala SS my sister wrecked on me (white with red interior, buckets and console, 327/250 HP with Powerglide) it was a beauty.

8. Be cautious with that - alot of Hondas are made here in America.
personally, I don't care what country owns my car - that's just money for a CEO. What I care about is where my car is made. I have a Toyota that was made in America - that's what counts the most - an American made car, even if it is Japanese or German brand, means that everyday american people made that product.

15. Isn't Arizona a community property state?
Edited on Mon Sep-22-08 01:45 PM by aint_no_life_nowhere
If so, then both spouses own an undivided share of the whole of any item acquired by either of them during the marriage. I assume Arizona is the principal residence of their marital "community".

20. In terms of community property it's the same thing
Edited on Mon Sep-22-08 04:10 PM by aint_no_life_nowhere
Her contractual obligations are his. If she signs a contract to buy a car with community property funds it's also McCain's financial responsiblity as he also owns those funds and he owns the car on purchase. Her debts are his and vice versa. Unless Cindy bought the cars with funds she clearly sequestered before the marriage and always kept separate and paid for the car with them, then actually it was the community or communal relationship of man and wife that bought the car, regardless of who signed the purchase contract. I think most married couples would say "we" bought a new car, even if only one of them signs the paperwork.
