After volunteering for MoveOn.Org yesterday and calling people in swing states, I've come to the
conclusion that people are either very well informed on the issues and the candidates, or they're
Republican.

The purpose of the calling party was to contact other MoveOn members around the country and ask them if they could volunteer
on specific dates, to help the Obama campaign register voters or to make calls. There was a 2-page handout we all were given
and a short video to watch. And then we all took our cell phones and wandered off to every corner of the house, to start
working our way down the call sheets.

The worst calls were the people who were adamantly anti-Obama and somehow were incorrectly placed on the list
as MoveOn members. One guy admitted that he'd gone to MoveOn.Org online and signed up, but only "to see what garbage
they're throwing around out there." One guy just said, "No f***in' way!" and hung up on me.

But the best calls (and there were several) were like the one I made to a woman in Port St. Lucie, Fla. who said she was so happy to get the call,
because she had been looking for a way to become more involved in Obama's campaign but didn't quite know how. She enthusiastically
volunteered for all three days in question, and then asked if she could bring her husband, her mother and her son!

Yes, yes and more yes. We need every bit of help we can get!

21. And they refuse information, so there's not much hope in helping them.
I really hate saying that, but I have family members that I have been trying for years to break through. Decades, actually.

10. Heh heh. And it seems to be true. The Obama voters I connected with were passionate and definitely
knew the issues. The What-am-I-doing-on-this-list Republicans not only didn't know what the issues
are but didn't care to learn. All they know is: McCain is not black.

I'm sure (maybe) there are some Republicans who don't fit this mold, but I haven't run into any of them yet.

9. There were people, like yourself, who said it would hard to find the time. So I gave them
the phone number of the campaign office and said that, if they find themselves with a couple hours off
on a Sun., to just give them a call and see if they need help.

In each case, they took the number. Even if one of them turns up, it's a plus.

about DU. Especially since I can't imagine living without it!:hi:

13. Your observation does not surprise me
The country is deeply polarized. This is what we are up against. The only thing we can do is reach out to the relatively few reasonable people in the middle, those who eschew both extremes.

16. You're right. This was my first time - ever! - getting actively involved in the campaign; and for
Edited on Mon Sep-22-08 10:31 AM by hisownpetard
anyone who's never done it, I heartily recommend doing so ASAP.

It's a life-affirming experience.

Edited to add: There were veteran campaigners there who had already logged in hundreds of calls, and they were brilliant.
They have already heard every possible reaction and had a perfect response for each!

Ex:
Statement: I was a Hillary supporter, and I'm voting for McCain.
Response: Oh, I was, too! But, you know, Hillary wants us to vote for Barack and to do anything else would be disloyal...
And a vote for Sarah Palin is like taking 100 steps backwards...

17. I received one of those calls from a very nice lady!
As we talked issues, I almost mentioned that I'm a DUer and thus extremely well informed. I will volunteer for Obama, trying to get around a physical issue right now that's limiting my mobility, but I can make calls and will do so for the local Obama campaign. We truly are facing a daunting task, that's for sure. The other day I got a forward from a relative with "info" about Obama giving money to some evil rebel group in Kenya, and how he's a Muslim terrorist whose goal is to "take us down from within". I answered with the standard "check Snopes for the real story" but to no avail. She fired back a response that nuh-uh, she's not wrong, that Obama said in his book he's a Muslim and will always side with "his people" and 'sides that, he turned his back on the flag during the Star Spangled Banner, not to mention his wife is not an American 'cause she said she was never proud to be an American. SIGH...! There is no reasoning with these people, so I give up even trying. And yes, my relative is a Republican, though she did mention she's not too thrilled with McCain, though she assured me she will not vote for Obama.

Anyway, kudos for your active support of Obama and MoveOn. I have given $$ to both. Nothing less than our Democracy is at stake!
