During the 1976 debate between Gerald Ford and Jimmy Carter, Gerald Ford said "Poland was not under Soviet domination." This was at a time when the Warsaw Pact still existed and Poland was very much controlled by the Soviet Union...It was a major gaffe... There were even signs by Polish Americans saying "Thank you for liberating Poland."
