The Humane Society endorses a President for the first time ever...
Edited on Mon Sep-22-08 02:57 PM by CatBO
Yeah, the Humane Society. They have never before endorsed a Presidential candidate, that is until now. Sarah Palin's cruelty to animals helped push them in this direction:

https://community.hsus.org/humane/notice-description.tcl?newsletter_id=27497157

Read it, forward it to all of your friends who love animals. And kick in a few bucks for the HSUS if you have it. Our ability and our choice to love and cherish God's creatures is what makes simple humans great.

Edited to add: great minds think alike, I was just about to edit in this photo:

More about the dog here

According to Kohl, Baby's vocal chords had been cut so the millers wouldn't have to listen to her barks and cries. Later, one of her legs was amputated after she shattered it in a fall. Kohl attributes the deterioration of her bones to overbreeding.

Kohl then took Baby on a quest to publicize the ills of puppy mills. For the last three years, Baby has posed with sympathizers including celebs (Lindsay Lohan), sports stars (Martina Navratilova) and a host of politicians -- including Barack Obama.

80. thats seriously fucked up
I'll let the f zinger fly. I know alot of cruelty surrounding puppy mills. Just reading that didn't make it any easier. Our beagle died in January. (lung cancer)
The main thing I miss most about her is well her beagle bark/howl and singing. And reading the line there ... think I'll go cry off my anger somewhere in a corner.

Anyone that would do that to an animal deserves the death penalty.

Heck, she even throws her ball or toy and barks for me to go get it. I argue with her(bark, no, bark, I'm got getting it, bark, you get it, bark) and my daughter says I am crazy because of it. It is something we have done for ten years, too late to stop now. Any way, I think it is kind of fun being crazy sometimes.

my favorite was our Airedale- talk about a strong minded dog, stubborn streak a mile wide. He would do the craziest thing, though. After relieving himself, he would start kicking all four legs like he was straight leg running, but stayed in the same spot. Grass would be flying, he'd be kicking and going nowhere. Kinda like he was peeling out. I always laughed my ass off when he did it.

24. Actually the poodle is named "Baby" and does only have 3 legs...
http://hslf.typepad.com/political_animal/2008/02/yes-we-canstop.html

From this link:

Baby was slated to be put down after outliving her productivity, but she was lucky enough to be rescued and adopted by Jana. One of Baby’s legs had been so badly mangled in her former cage that it had to be amputated, and her vocal cords had been cut so the puppy mill owners did not have to listen to the dog's constant cries to be let out of her cage.

Baby now travels the country as a three-legged ambassador for puppy mill dogs everywhere, and she is pictured in the book spreading the word with celebrities such as Lindsay Lohan, Moby, Bill Maher, Amy Sedaris, Alice Walker, and Judge Judy. Baby has also visited legislators and lobbied for animals on Capitol Hill. A few months after the book hits the shelves, in fact, there’s a chance Baby might have access to the White House—because one of the lawmakers featured prominently in the book is Senator Barack Obama.

giving birth to litter after little, before being rescued. Her leg was amputated when it got mangled in the cage and her vocal cords were cut so the monsters who ran that miserable operation could not hear her cry.

I posted a link further down this thread about it.

I'm not sure they're always kind to the animals they own, but I will guess that millions of homes have pets and this endorsement has got get their attention. I have a pet desert tortoise that I consider my best friend. For her attitude towards wolves in Alaska, I can say that Palin is one of the few people in the world I truly hate.

I'm proud to announce today that the HSLF board of directors -- which is comprised of both Democrats and Republicans -- has voted unanimously to endorse Barack Obama for President. The Obama-Biden ticket is the better choice on animal protection, and we urge all voters who care about the humane treatment of animals, no matter what their party affiliation, to vote for them.

and that she finally has a happy life.

My Cocoa had a similar life. Tied up to a shed for over 5 years. She had at least 4 litters before she was rescued. Skin and bones. Now she is a happy girl. I just can't get over how people can do this to defenseless animals.

It's going to be used in a book:

It's a very sad story, but Baby has been photographed with many people, apparently. I'm sure some Photoshopping was done but I do suspect it's actually a shot taken at the Lincoln memorial.

30. y'know, this post REALLY made my day
I've been so sad about all the bad stuff happening.

That photo made me smille. It's quite amazing, how a photo of a dog can be so good for the soul. And add in our future president, and it's a comforting reassuring image. I REALLY LOVE IT. The Obama campaign should turn this into a poster for fundraising.

thanks so much for posting that photo

49. Defenders of Wildlife has an ad
showing the wolf SLAUGHTER in Alaska (not for the fainthearted). They need donations to keep running it and get it into the toss-up states. So far, it has had a very positive effect. It would appear that even republicans are ticked off by this. The Humane society is on the ground in Texas, helping with the animals that are victims of Ike, and they also need donations. Please help both of these great organizations if you can. Also, make your donations to Def of Wildlife in Sarah Palin's name. Maybe Gov. Tundra Trash will get the message!

59. Tears here. At The Humane Society Link ....please read
Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) has been a solid supporter of animal protection at both the state and federal levels. As an Illinois state senator, he backed at least a dozen animal protection laws, including those to strengthen the penalties for animal cruelty, to help animal shelters, to promote spaying and neutering, and to ban the slaughter of horses for human consumption. In the U.S. Senate, he has consistently co-sponsored multiple bills to combat animal fighting and horse slaughter, and has supported efforts to increase funding for adequate enforcement of the Animal Welfare Act, Humane Methods of Slaughter Act, and federal laws to combat animal fighting and puppy mills.

Bravo!

72. VegSource also endorsed Obama.
===============================
So where does VegSource.com stand in all this?

We personally support the Obama/Biden ticket.

Just to be clear, our endorsement is not based on animal rights, and we frankly don't agree with everything Obama/Biden stand for. Nor do we disagree with everything McCain says. But we are really disturbed by the lying. We don't think we can survive four more years of that.

In 12 years on the web, we’ve never endorsed a candidate. Now we have.

We have no plan to pull Matthew’s Dominion website, as long as it remains a website about vegetarianism and animal compassion.
===============================

It's a vegetarian website:

Is this the puppy he promised his kids??? I didn't read all of the text, or the replies yet, but that's my baby( at least a reasonable facsimile) If it is their pup of choice, I hope they potty train it before they get into the White House!! They are extremely dense when it comes to housebreaking. Took my little guy 6 months. The thing that helped the most was crate training!! If that's their new baby, he's a man after my own heart. These Bichon's are smart as all get out (except for housebreaking !!)

103. Love the picture!
My first dog was a poodle.

Unfortunately I know a lot of rethug animal people who absolutely detest HSUS and its efforts to protect animals, even though they themselves treat their animals well. They oppose any kind of protective laws regarding animals, whether wild or domestic, because they see it as potentially infringing on their "rights". A bit like the right-wing meme "The Democrats will take your guns," or a knee-jerk hatred of the ACLU. So, the endorsement may help with some, and hurt with others. Still, I'm glad HSUS came out and spoke up for what they believe in.

106. How one treats animals
is a reflection of their compassion in general. Palin is quite simply a mean and vindictive person, as evidenced by the numerous writings of those who have worked with her in the past. Here is one:

http://www.salon.com/news/feature/2008/09/23/palin/index.html

"Before Sarah Palin decided to run for the Wasilla mayor's office in 1996 against incumbent John Stein, the Palins and Steins were friends. John Stein had helped launch Palin's political career, mentoring the hockey mom during her 1994 run for City Council, along with veteran council member Nick Carney. Stein's wife, Karen Marie, went to aerobics classes with Palin.

But when she announced her candidacy for Stein's seat, vowing to overturn the city's "old boy" establishment, a different Sarah Palin emerged. "Things got very ugly," recalled Naomi Tigner, a friend of the Steins. "Sarah became very mean-spirited."

The Wasilla mayor's seat is nonpartisan, and Mayor Stein, a former city planner who had held the post for nine years, ran a businesslike campaign that stressed his experience and competency. But Palin ignited the traditionally low-key race with scorching social issues, injecting "God, guns and abortion into the race -- things that had nothing to do with being mayor of a small town," according to Tigner.

Palin's mayoral campaign rode the wave of conservative, evangelical fervor that was sweeping Alaska in the '90s. Suddenly candidates' social values, not their ability to manage the roads and sewer systems, were dominating the debate. "Sarah and I were both Republicans, but this was an entirely new slant to local politics -- much more aggressive than anything I'd ever seen," said Stein, looking back at the election that put Palin on the political map.
Quantcast

There was a knife-sharp, personal edge to Palin's campaign that many locals found disturbing, particularly because of the warm relationship between Palin and Stein before the race..."

109. I knew they would come out
for Barack! The Defenders of Wildlife have been on this for a while. I expect the ASPCA to be next. This is wonderful. It accomplishes two things at once. It brings national attention to the plight of wolves and polar bears so that the world can see how they are treated. Second, it drives a bigger nail in the coffin of the repug campaign. Please send this email to people that you know. If possible, please send money to either DoW or HSUS to help support them. My parents were heavily envolved in our local humane society for several years. I know first hand the shoestring budget that most of these chapters run on. Don't forget the local humane society also. They are in constant need of money, food, blankets, and cleaning supplies. What most of them need is volunteers. If people would show up to walk the dogs, clean cages, groom animals, etc. it would take a burden off of them. I don't mean to get on my soapbox, but this is a very important issue to many.
Help those that can't help themselves.

134. I understand PETA is refusing to take a stand against Palin
saying they don't want to get involved in political campaigns. If this is true, they have lost my support. Kudos to the Humane Society.

Then shame on PETA.

161. I think an endorsement from PETA would do Obama more harm
than good because so many people feel PETA is too extreme. I myself love PETA but I think politically it's better they stay out of it. People who love and care for animals don't need to have an endorsement from PETA they KNOW what kind of person Palin is.

141. Palin and her wolf hunting got to one of my older female coworkers
She stopped my computer equipment area today and admired a wolf poster I have. I know she's a big-time animal lover so I said if you love wolves I hope you're not voting for Palin. I know earlier in the year she said she couldn't vote for Obama. Today she said she's a Republican who had moved to independent and there was no way though she admires McCain that she could vote for that ticket because of how Palin is to animals.

She said she's hiding that from our boss(female) who sends her all kinds of the usual Repuke email crap. The boss knows better than to send that stuff to me or it would be refuted. One of my coworkers wives made the mistake of sending me the Obama's gonna tax you crap a few months ago and got several refuting emails from me telling her the only one who might get a tax increase was the boss in her tax bracket not us worker bees.

142. Gosh, I'd been hoping for this!!!!
I was hoping the Humane Society would speak out!!! It gave me the impetus that I needed to send this link to all of my "animal loving" Republican friends.

Personally, I simply do not see how anyone who could love an animal could vote for someone like Palin knowing her track record.

143. Sheesh...
...that picture alone brought tears to my eyes! Wow! For the first time, the freakin' Humane Society is backing Obama... Who's next, the ASPCA? Let's see how many animal rights groups will now join the Humane Society! It could change things, because people treat their pets as family!

150. You're wrong, and here's why...
Read the story that accompanies this all at the link. He is holding a 3 legged dog, who was abused and had her vocal chords cut when she was at a puppy mill. She now travels as an ambassador against animal abuse. That dog is amazing.

155. Awwwww....
I was just kidding about getting a tougher dog. I am owned by one of those little floofy dogs and wouldn't trade him for the world!

I'm glad HSUS did this. Especially compelling when compared to Defenders of Wildlife's ad about Fraulein McMoosekiller

145. Just wondering how many dogs McCain has...
And if he can remember how many.

(And yes, I KNOW he deserves lots of dogs 'cause he couldn't have any while he was a POW)

149. What a great photo!
That cute little pooch looks totally
at ease with Barack.
:-)

I think he and Michele should get two dogs for Malia
and Sasha.
The two dogs can keep each other company.

see their endorsement and understand why they took a stand now.

( besides Obama's record of advocating for animal welfare.)

One word- Palin!

Palin is the personification of everything we are against.

As my cousin in Sweden stated in a frantic email to me the day after Palin's
acceptance speech-

"You can't let that crazy women get anywhere NEAR the White House!"

Yep, the world is watching.

From my cats, Sasha, Tooter, Felix, Robin, Libby, Cricket, Dylan and Oliver, who are Obama supporters. (Yes, too many, but they were all strays, abandoned and one was a shelter cat.) Yippee for the Humane Society! Go Obama!!!
