Knock on doors. 12 to 1. What's your excuse?
Twelve to one.

For every twelve voters who you talk to at their doors, one voter goes and votes who would not otherwise have voted. If you're asking: "how can I be most effective in helping my candidate win the election?" then an organizer's answer is going to be: knock on doors.

Those are MUCH better odds than trying to talk to the freeper at work or your GOP father in law.

You knock on 48 doors (only 25% will be home) you get one vote for Obama.

That's how we win.

Go Blue.

1. From my experiences, knocking on doors is more effective than phonebanking.
Both are good, but they like someone who can look them in the eye and talk to them about the issues. Not someone behind the phone who they think is just reading from a script.

5. I agree 100%. I sometimes get pissed at all the calls I get
mostly because calls are about getting me to give more money (believe me, I've given my share, the max by the time this is over) and someone knocking on my door is about getting my vote.

At least that's how I feel about the difference.

Get out there and knock on doors this weekend.

3. 825 doors knocked in the last 3 weekends
This coming weekend will have canvassing in two parts of the county with two seperate shifts of canvassing - goal is 700 doors this weekend. Already have the targeted precincts picked out, the turfs cut within the precinct and all of the materials ready. We've been holding GOTV trainings since the summer to get people fired up and ready to start walking!

6. My Excuse is That
I broke my toe walking up the stairs to the first house.

Would like to volunteer again, but it won't be this week.

7. Ouch! I feel your pain.
Edited on Mon Sep-22-08 04:13 PM by backscatter712
I rolled my ankle on a hike back in July, and thanks to my residual clubfoot deformity, not only did I sprain it, but I also pulled the peroneal tendon. The doctor still has me in a cast boot and using at least one crutch, though he would like me using both crutches.

So, sorry no canvassing. It's the phone bank for me.

10. I did some canvassing after the initial injury.
Edited on Mon Sep-22-08 04:29 PM by backscatter712
Back then, I thought it was a simple sprained ankle - it was sore, but I figured I could grit my teeth and push through it.

After about 30 houses, the pain got so bad I had to stop canvassing and limp back to my car. After talking to my doctor and googling symptoms and such on the internet, and noticing that the location of the pain was a bit different than your typical sprained ankle, that's when I was diagnosed with the peroneal tendon injury.

At least at this point it should eventually heal. It doesn't really hurt anymore, but my foot's pretty weak - if I stand on that foot without some sort of support, my ankle gets really wobbly, and there's the danger of re-injuring it, so the doctor wants me to stay off it as much as I can stand, since putting weight on it does strain it. Tendons do take forever to heal.

Hope your foot gets better soon.

11. Knocking doors for Obama won't do any good
...if, like me, you live in Alabama.

Phone banking at least allows me to call into the battleground states.

Believe me, if I thought there was a reasonable chance that Alabama could swingto Obama, I'd canvass like there was no tomorrow.

Reality is, Alabama is among the reddest of the red states and my energy is best spent elsewhere.

14. I live in Utah, you don't KNOW red like Utah red! I'm spending weekends in Colorado.
Drive over Friday evening, canvas Sat and Sun, drive back.

I'd phone but I don't have a cell phone and I think walking in Colorado will do more good.

15. And your efforts in Colorado are VERY appreciated!
We NEED that state!

There are two states within a reasonable drive from where I live in Northeast Alabama: Georgia and Tennessee.

Again, not much likely to happen in either of those states.

It would be quite a hop to Mississippi, which is probably redder than Alabama.

Florida is the only potential swing state that borders Alabama, and it is way remote from where I live. Plus, the Florida panhandle is basically the same as Alabama. In fact, we refer to the FL panhandle as 'Lower Alabama.' (aka the Redneck Rivera)

Thanks again for your work in Colorado!

12. I like knocking on doors better then phone banking
I've knocked on doors for Obama and our Governor here in WA. It's a very tight rematch. And I volunteer with Gov. Gregoire's campaign.

Here's what causes did for me in WA. I was an alternate delegate for Obama. I became a PCO. Now I'm the secretary for our LD. I'm running a campaign booth for the first time that Democrats or Repubs have done so in our small towns big annual event. The Repubs are going to be shocked at the Dem support here in Snohomish County. I also work with the Campaign for Change, but as a mother of 2 there is only so much that I can do. So...Obama certainly has changed my life...sideline Dem to a fully involved Dem.

13. My excuse is that I'm pretty much the last person they would want as the face of the Obama campaign.
I can barely go to the store for Mountain Dew without stabbing someone, and you want me going door to door for Obama? :P

And for the record, I'm only half joking about this.

16. 10am...let the phone banking begin
I've gone door to door every Sat for the last month. It's hard to cover a lot of territory. I think I get more accomplished on the phone.I can call 150 numbers in the time it takes to canvas 50 homes. The not homes take only 20 seconds. Plus we are still 90 degrees and humid in Fla. Remember you can contact your local Obama group and they can set you up to phone bank from home. So you can du and call at the same time.
