Inspired by another post earlier today, (Props and kicks and recs to graywarrior in NH):

The local republicans in Carroll County NH are getting scared

We are assuming it's the republican representatives who, for the first time in years, have a democrate challenger. Last week in the middle of the night, every single one of her signs were stolen from people's yards and sides of the road, ripped to shreds and dumped on her front lawn.

She's is up against Gene Chandler, biggest thief ever in these parts, but he continues to get voted in. Cops told her she is being targeted because no other democrats signs were touched. It's gonna start getting down and dirty and maybe even dangerous are here.

I decided to donate $25.00 to the victim, Syndi White, who is running for that seat in the house, mentioned above.

What better revenge than for these thefts to benefit the victim?

I challenge any DU members who are financially able to join me in making a statement by sending funds to Ms. White. Please join me, if you can.

My receipt:

3. I was thinking that sending a few $$$ to a candidate who had every sign stolen
might make a statement AND involve a little poetic justice, ie: "steal her signs = filling her war chest".

Do I need to edit my post?

26. The candidate can buy $150 more signs than when this thread started.
And maybe she can treat them with something, but first she needs to buy the signs.

6. A few $$$ from us would double her contributions...Could make the news.
Her ActBlue site reads $325 contributed so far, $25 from me (and I'm in California, which is already a surprise for her, I'll bet).

I don't suppose that a small flood of contributions from around the country came into her campaign and doubled her budget that it would be a remarkable thing for her and for DU.

It could make the news, stranger things have happened.

7. If I had the money
I would literally put my sign in the middle of a painful obstacle course - barbed wire, scummy, slippery rocks, and broken glass glued all over the sign. If they want to go through all that for the sign, they can have it as it will give me pleasure thinking how torn up they got.

11. Thanks, but they're not my signs, I live in California.
The victim lives in NH and is running against a republican.

She lost her signs.

She needs new signs before she has anything to put in her windows.

25. The victim in this case has no signs, so we need to help her get some.
Her little fund was only $300 before this thread, now it's $450.

Donate here, as little as $1.00 is helpful and makes a statement.

10. Thanks, but NOT looking for pepperspray type fixes here folks.
The idea is to help this victim, to "reward the thieves" by strengthening her campaign.

Advice about how to protect signs are not going to help her, unless you tell her.

The advice, while good, simply misses the point of the post.

23. Check Syndi's rising numbers here!!! Went from $300 to $450!!
I've been refreshing this page, which was at $325.00 after I donated so probably has been at $300 for, I don't know, maybe days or weeks.

http://www.actblue.com/entity/fundraisers/20902

It's up to $450.00!!! She's going to wake up with the happiest WTF she's ever known!

BTW, I sent an email to the local county Dem office to let them know what you're all doing. I think the local paper might have a story.

Makes for a sweet story, from a sad story, I think.

DUer graywarrior expects to see her today and is going to get back to us.

I'm really grateful and impressed with DU, her campaign fund went from $300 to $586, hopefully higher over the next few hours.

30. Dig a post hole
Fill it so that the bottom 6 inches or so of the sign posts will be encased in concrete. Replace dirt and grass over the top of the hole. Watch the fun.

32. A DU member is helping her prevent theft. Right now we're trying to help w/ $$$
I can understand wanting to prevent future thefts, but ALL the signs were stolen, she has no signs to protect.

DU bumped her $300 little fund to $450, another $5 or $10 would be great!

33. I can't donate for the presidential election
Edited on Tue Sep-23-08 02:19 PM by dbmk
As I am not a citizen nor staying in the US.

Can someone tell me if I can for this?

Edit: Checked it myself. http://www.fec.gov/pages/brochures/citizens.shtml says I can't. Expected as much.
But if you had planned to donate to DU, donate to her instead and I will donate to DU. Up to 50$ total.

34. Yes, for this State House election, I believe you can!
If it was a US representative or senate seat, no, but this is a NH house seat.

I checked the NH Secretary of State page on election laws, pasted below.

Federal law, from your link:
It is important to note that the guide focuses on political activity in Federal elections--not State or local. Federal elections are those for the President and Vice President, the U.S. Senate and the U.S. House of Representatives.

From the NH SOS page:

"664:4 Prohibited Political Contributions. No contribution, whether tangible or intangible, shall be made to a candidate, a political committee, or political party, or in behalf of a candidate or political committee or political party, directly or indirectly, for the purpose of promoting the success or defeat of any candidate or political party at any state primary or general election:

I. By any corporation, or by any officer, director, executive, agent or employee acting in behalf of such corporation, or by any organization representing or affiliated with one or more corporations or by any officer, director, executive, agent or employee acting in behalf of such organization.

II. By any partnership as such or by any partner acting in behalf of such partnership.

III. By any labor union or group of labor unions, or by any officer, director, executive, agent or employee acting in behalf of such union or group of unions; or by any organization representing or affiliated with any such union or group of unions, or by any officer, director, executive, agent or employee acting in behalf of such organization.

IV. Repealed by Chapter 415 Laws of 1983.

V. By any person (1) if in excess of $5,000 in value, except for contributions made by a candidate in behalf of his own candidacy, or if in excess of $1,000 in value by any person or by any political committee to a candidate or a political committee working on behalf of a candidate who does not voluntarily agree to limit his campaign expenditures and those expenditures made on his behalf as provided in RSA 664:5-a, (2) if made anonymously or under a name not that of the donor, (3) if made in the guise of a loan, (4) if in any other manner concealed, (5) if made without the knowledge and written consent of the candidate or his fiscal agent, a political committee or its treasurer, or not to any one of the same."

Looks like you can do it!!!! Thank you!!!

37. Wish I could
From my above posted link:

"Foreign Nationals

Foreign nationals may not make contributions in connection with any election--Federal, State or local. This prohibition does not apply to foreign citizens who are lawfully admitted for permanent residence in the United States (those who have "green cards"). "

Makes sense.

But again; I will match new donations to her, with a donation to DU. Up to 75$ now.
