"Washoe County Democrats are closing in on registered Republicans as the parties focus on the Nevada’s battleground county in the presidential election.
On Thursday, county Voter Registrar Dan Burk said Republicans had 87,971 registered and Democrats 84,705, with a backlog of more than 5,000 registration applications awaiting processing.
Since registration for the primary closed, the Republican edge has shrunk from 5,648 to 3,266.
Since the 2006 election, Republicans have added only 2,502 voters while Democrats registered 15,730, mostly in the run up to the presidential caucuses in January.
Burk said he’s getting calls from reporters at the New York Times, the Los Angles Times and other media outlets to keep tabs on the voter statistics. From what he’s hearing from the national media, “Washoe County could perhaps decide the presidency of the United States,” he said. “If you look at the red states and the blue states, it comes down to a very small number of states.”
http://news.rgj.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=200880922049Other nuggets from the article: Registration closes October 14th. 5000 are yet to be processed. If Dems maintain their current new registration rate of 6-1 on just those 5000, Washoe turns blue. The County Clerk has given out 8000 registration forms in the past two weeks, has 3000 left, and has ordered 15,000 more.
Kerry lost Nevada to Bush by 21000 votes in 2004. Before this is done we may have registered that many new Dems in Washoe alone.
This is how we win elections: voter by voter, precinct by precinct, county by county, state by state. Congrats to all those on the ground volunteers who have contributed to this massive effort in Nevada.
