Factcheck.org Has Been Increasingly Opinionated Based On Opinions Not Facts - Social Security |
|
Edited on Tue Sep-23-08 12:23 PM by Median Democrat
The most recent examples are, first, the McCain healthcare like banking quote. The factcheck article goes out of its way to argue that McCain did not really mean he wanted to deregulate healthcare. Likewise, on Social Security, factcheck characterized Obama's attacks on McCain as "false" based on the watered down version of the 2005 social security bill that McCain supported, RATHER than McCain's actual statements. The Bill was never voted on, so how can the bill reflect McCain actual beliefs?
Likewise, what has McCain actually supported? McCain has offered contradictory statements, and before factcheck says that Obama's ad is false it should require McCain to explain how he plans to address the solvency of Social Security without raising taxes, because to do so requires McCain to drastically cut benefits.
Perhaps Factcheck.org is operating in some magical fantasy land where McCain can maintain Social Security benefits without raising taxes, but that is not the reality we live in. We need factcheck for factcheck, if it is not willing to offer a fact based analysis of the candidates proposals.

5. However, Read The Factcheck Articles By Brooks Jackson |
|
They have been fairly condescending an opinionated in their analysis of Obama's ads, and accept McCain's explanations while ignoring contradictory statements. For example, the factcheck articles regarding McCain's Social Security plan does not take into account Mccain's March statements to the WSJ in favor of privitization, nor does the article require McCain to reconcile how he plans to maintain social security benefits without raising taxes. It is not mathematically possible. To maintain social security benefits, McCain will need to raise taxes.
ALSO, if McCain imposes his privitization plan, this will reduce the amount of money going into social security, which will cause a further deficit, which must be made up somehow. How? Factcheck does not do the math, it just accepts McCain's explanation at face value.

6. McCain has been pandering to seniors, |
|
saying that he does not intend to privitize benefits for anyone currently receiving benefits, only future recipients. A classic 'divide and conquer' approach.\
However this is the same John McCain who referred to Social Security in general as a "disgrace" and has generally been hostile to the entire concept throughout his career.
