DON'T Wear Obama Gear to the Poll on Election day, in case you didn't already know
Edited on Tue Sep-23-08 03:27 PM by Heather MC
PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE ADVISE EVERYONE YOU KNOW THAT THEY ABSOLUTELY CAN NOT GO TO THE POLLS WEARING ANY OBAMA SHIRTS, PINS OR HATS, IT IS AGAINST THE LAW AND WILL BE GROUNDS TO HAVE THE POLLING OFFICIALS TO TURN YOU AWAY.

THAT IS CONSIDERED CAMPAIGNING AND NO ONE CAN CAMPAIGN WITHIN X AMOUNT OF FEET TO THE POLLS. THEY ARE BANKING ON US BEING EXCITED AND NOT BEING
AWARE OF THIS LONG STANDING LAW THAT YOU CAN BET WILL BE ENFORCED THIS YEAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

THEY ARE ALSO BANKING THAT IF YOU ARE TURNED AWAY YOU WILL GO HOME AND NOT CHANGE YOUR CLOTHES. PLEASE JUST DON'T WEAR OBAMA GEAR OF ANY SORTS TO THE POLLS!!
PLEASE SHARE THIS INFORMATION!

*********************************
There are a lot of new voters this year please get the word out
thanks

EDIT: Is this true? I just found out people are recieving this as an email. So now I am doubting it
I am a first time voter, I have never been to the polls, so forgive my ignorance if I am spreading a lie. It wasn't my intention

1. I doubt anyone will get turned away, though.
You can just turn your shirt inside out.

Just don't have OBAMA tattooed on your forehead!

2. Do you have a link to that law?
Is it a federal law? State? I've never heard of this before and I've been voting for 30 years.

Edited on Tue Sep-23-08 03:27 PM by qanda
People can wear whatever they want. However, they cannot come into the polling place and pass out literature or actively campaign within 100 feet of the polling place (and we do measure). Election workers must wear politically neutral clothing.

8. That's how I understood the law
That's why I asked the OP for a link to the law. I think this is wrong info.

9. This law DOES NOT EXIST...
because there is no single law governing poll behavior. Every state has different rules with different specifics about how far elecltioneering must be. While there is generally a restriction on pollwatchers / party officials etc with political items in the polling area, there is generally NO restriction on an average voter walking in with their campaign button. Even if there is, the worst thing that will happen is that they'll be asked to remove it or cover it.

10. I don't wear campaign stuff when going into the polls
Its repugnent and dishonorable to the process. That time in the booth is between me and my government, its my private time -- nobody can take that away from me. Who I vote for is more important than what is on my shirt. So pissing off a Republican by wearing a shirt that is offensive to him, or shoving my guy in the face of a possible undecided is rude and confrontational, plus its a violation of their own private political time. If I want the courtesy of being treated civilly, then I should treat others civilly.

No I do not wear any political buttons, shirts, hats, stickers or whatever in my polling place. I do put a button on and my "I voted sticker" we get at my polling place afterward.

15. That's Admirable of you, However their are a lot of first time voters
Who may not feel that way. I also think their are a lot of people who are only coming out to Vote because of Obama, not election process loyalty. Infact I think if Obama doesn't win this election
Alot of newly registered voters will not vote again

11. it seems to vary by state
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=389x4068923

My sister's in Minnesota and she's told me about people having to cover up pins, t-shirts, etc. (I live in Oregon so I vote by mail. I can vote NUDE if I want to!)

I can just imagine thousands of first-time voters (if not more), all excited about voting for Obama and wearing their t-shirts and sweatshirts, being sent home to change. We really need to get the word out on this--especially since, as somebody suggested on the thread above, it's not unlikely that the McCain campaign is going to send out e-mails saying "show your enthusiasm and wear your Obama gear when you go to vote!"

Please k&r this, and tell all the first-time voters you know to bring a coat or sweater or something to put over their Obama t-shirts!

16. I think this is bullshit....
BUT it depends on local laws as to what 'campaign' gear
is allowed on voting sites.

When I lived in Chicago, they had strict rules as to
"NO CAMPAIGNING" within 50 feet of a voting site.

So... no signs, banners, posters, buttons within
a certain space.. to portray the space as neutral.

WEll... now I live in PA, and everything is different.

Outside our local polling place, all bets are off.
As you walk in the door, there are campaign people with
hats, shirts, buttons, literature slamming you with
all manner of tripe: "Do you know how to vote? We'll go
in with you!"

Of course, where I live is mostly McCain country-
(gun lovers, flag wavers... 'red necks' (no offense,
but that's what they call themselves)..

I always tell them: NO Thanks.
And when I go inside, the election judges at the tables
know me and say: "She's a dem"

and direct me to the dem voting machine.
Oh, yeah, they have 2 different machines...
one for Republicans,
One for democrats.

Very interesting....

They made people remove buttons and anything else that had candidate or party endorsements.
