Electoral vote nightmare scenario!!! |
|
What if Obama, McCain, Nader and Barr EACH end up with 134 electoral votes??!!111
And what if McKinney ends up with the remaining 2 and holds out for the highest bidder??!!111
And what if Bush then declares martial law and Sarah Palin puts all the electoral votes on eBay and the voters all say "Thanks but no thanks on that election to nowhere"??!!111
It could happen!!!!!!!!11111111111111111
And if it does, what then, my fellow concern junkies, what then??!!111

1. They flip for it, heads or tails. Before they flip for it, Cheney gets to say "Call it, friendo" |

Article II, Section 1 of the United States Constitution, as amended by the 12th Amendment, states in part:
The electors shall meet in their respective states and vote by ballot for President and Vice-President, one of whom, at least, shall not be an inhabitant of the same state with themselves; they shall name in their ballots the person voted for as President, and in distinct ballots the person voted for as Vice-President, and they shall make distinct lists of all persons voted for as President, and of all persons voted for as Vice-President, and of the number of votes for each, which lists they shall sign and certify, and transmit sealed to the seat of the government of the United States, directed to the President of the Senate....
So first off, there is no polling place where all of the electors come together; they meet in their own state. Second, keep in mind that the slate of electors are named by the candidate's party organizers, and that all but one or two states require that electors "vote the mandate" on their ballot. In order for Nader, Barr and McKinney to have any electoral votes, they must win the plurality (not a majority) of the votes cast in that state. The chance that any third party candidate will win a plurality of votes is vanishingly small; the chance that three of them will win states is even smaller; the chance that all of them will win enough votes to cause the proposed problem.... Well, I think every proton in the universe will decay into energy before that happens.

19. If there's a 4 way tie, we go to a Paper-Scissors-Rock tournament broadcast on ESPN 2 |
|
My prediction is McCain loses in the first round when he is disqualified for trying to play Paper-Scissors-Rock-POW.
