Conservative Icon George Will Continues Attack on McCain
Edited on Tue Sep-23-08 05:00 PM by chicagoexpat
Under the pressure of the financial crisis, one presidential candidate is behaving like a flustered rookie playing in a league too high… It is arguable that McCain, because of his boiling moralism and bottomless reservoir of certitudes, is not suited to the presidency.
– George Will, “McCain Loses His Head” Washington Post, 9/23/08

John McCain showed his personality this week and made some of us fearful.
– George Will On ABC’s This Week, 9/21/08

1. Thank You, George Will
I'm sure that whatever motivates you isn't what motivates us, but on the off-chance that there's a drop of human decency and intellectual rigor left in your body, I honor you for the enemy you battle.

19. They exist. They do!
They're just rare.

When you get past the racists, the hateful, the ignorant, the jerry springer guests, the people who vote republican because it's their 'team', etc....you whittle down the numbers to about maybe 5% of the population. Maybe 10% that are 'rational conservatives'.

That is they actually do disagree on policy etc, and will disucss it even handedly. they're flat out wrong of course on many things, and their 'moral compass' is skewed to the Ayn Randian direction of ME ME ME. To the point where it's sometimes hard to call a person rational who thinks that he shouldn't have to pay a dime in taxes to pay for the health care of a child of poor parents.

Basically they're ignorant and selfish.

Ok so maybe they're not all that rational...

13. Its too big of a job to flat out put someone not cut out for position in it
This is akin to hiring a person to work at a record store that only listens to circus music, except the stakes are escalated by factors in the trillions.

This ticket insults the entire process. Its really stupid to even debate McCain/Palin. They are the most foolish ticket I've seen. Even Bush had broad ideas, horrible, horrible ones for sure, but he at least had some course of action and did his dirt on plan rather than reaction.

Rolling the dice is not a governing strategy. Nor are pettiness and vindictiveness. Appalling disinterest in and vacuum of knowledge on any of the issues of the times and fixation on minutia aren't really strong points either.
This is an incredible farce and too much is at risk to actually elect a gag to lead the nation.

29. He is a more old school-not quite like the newer variety of snarling cons (Hannitty, O'Really etc.)
Edited on Thu Sep-25-08 11:37 AM by nam78_two
Obviously I disagree with his politics, but he is a conservative whose stuff I can read without feeling as though I am getting stupider in the process. And every now and then he gets something right.

He is one of the very, very few cons out there these days (even before his attacks on McCain) about whom I could say that here is a guy who I can completely disagree with without thinking he is a complete moron or asshole. He doesn't have that deeply anti-intellectual bent that so many cons proudly flaunt nowadays.

24. I don't like George Will, but he is smart. He's trying to save his own reputation.
He sees the writing is on the wall for the GOP in their current form and he wants to still have an audience come November 5th.

30. I think having to go on tv after the Palin interview
and defend her by saying that he didn't know what the Bush Doctrine was either was the last straw. Even conservative cranks have some level of self respect.
