Americans Oppose Bailouts, Favor Obama to Handle Market Crisis
By Matthew Benjamin

Sept. 24 (Bloomberg) -- Americans oppose government rescues of ailing financial companies by a decisive margin, and blame Wall Street and President George W. Bush for the credit crisis.

By a margin of 55 percent to 31 percent, Americans say it's not the government's responsibility to bail out private companies with taxpayer dollars, even if their collapse could damage the economy, according to the latest Bloomberg/Los Angeles Times poll.

Poll respondents say Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama would do a better job handling the financial crisis than Republican John McCain, by a margin of 45 percent to 33 percent. Almost half of voters say the Democrat has better ideas to strengthen the economy than his Republican opponent.

6. I understand exactly why he is doing this
The McCain plan is to muddy the differences between the two candidates, and then rely on "oooh, it's a scary black man" argument to win voters.

Except it isn't working, except perhaps to hold some of the less-clueful populist-leaning base in place. To anyone not awash in the kool-aid, it looks farcical.

3. Concerned Obama may feel something constructive is necessary, and of McCain's Hail Mary no.
McCain to look populist, follow GOP platform, and Obama because he feels it may help. The equity sharing won't float, and the oversight will be insufficient, but he may feel it's the best we can do on something necessary. GOP setting this up like IWR, which was a no-win before an election.

Will the public trust Obama enough if Mccain the only one to say no, even though McC is at his compromised heart a deregulator. Anything for a win.

Amazing what Rachel said about Bush wanting to extend Iraq for a year due to political considerations. Maybe not amazing.

I'm still torn how necessary to bailout, and my hubby is a business reporter for decades. He doesn't like the bailout.
