I'm the wife of a vet AND a daughter of a vet...(USN - submarines, both husband and dad) :patriot:

Edited to include one of my favorite Obama quotes...“We are the party of Roosevelt. We are the party of Kennedy. So don't tell me that Democrats won't defend this country. Don't tell me that Democrats won't keep us safe.” ~ Barack Obama

if we stayed there.

Here's the thread I put up about last Veterans Day in Boston --> http://journals.democraticunderground.com/unhappycamper/231

And here's the result of our court case --> http://journals.democraticunderground.com/unhappycamper/235

And yes, I'm in the picture.

77. Our younger son did his basic at Ft. Benning in '94- went to Fr. Bragg 82nd Airborne.
Edited on Wed Sep-24-08 06:34 PM by 1Hippiechick
Ft. Benning was a beautiful place, I thought. I still can't read the letters he sent home during training. I cried my eyes out - he was only 18 and straight out of HS - went to college for one semester and then joined up. Tore us up. Pulled his time, got out, went to University and graduated with honors. He now says that after having that military experience, he isn't afraid to tackle anything in life. But....it flat out broke my heart and I cannot talk about it to this day without crying....God's truth. I will never get over it....the feelings come rushing back as if only yesterday. And, then the young recruits we saw down there in basic - flat out scared to death - sheer terror on their faces. I will never forget it. Never. (But you also have to bear in mind that I'm a 60s activist and opposed to the draft, the war - lost friends who were drafted to Nam.)

Edited to add: Younger son is FLAMING on FIRE for Obama. Older son who DIDN'T server is as big a Flamer, but normally Republican. BUT, he HATES McCain - says he's not going to vote.

22. Yes, dad will remain my hero. He guided me well and was proud that I followed his lead
to also serve in the US Army. Dad grew up dirt poor in the rural midwest but Army service (GI Bill) was his ticket into the middle class. Dad would often quip, "Each day in the Army is like Sunday on the farm."

I grew up with my dad being in the service, 20 years of my life, the 2nd of 3 kids. I know the sacrifices made. Living arrangements, money, but most of all time together.

It's not just the person, but the entire family that serves.

Thank you, and please pass my thanks on to your children, and your husband. There are those of us who understand, and appreciate it.

70. My husband took an oath
to defend the Constitution. He did not take an oath to be loyal to the president. (he is a prosecutor) - I have seen him more angry at what has happened to this country than at anything else, ever.

It's also b.s. that only the republicans defend the country and the constitution.

total b.s.

68. Dad and two uncles were navy, WWII. One uncle was air force,
WWII.

Cousins by the gallon were army and Forrest was a POW in Europe thanks to Monty and his damned "market basket" bridge too far fiasco. Other uncles were marines and were at Guadalcanal when the Navy had to leave them.

Brother in National guard because my mom couldn't take him being drafted. His number was 2.

Two of my great-grandpas were on either side of the same battle in the civil war. My father's family had people in every war since before Independence and so did mom's.

I salute all vets and their families. All of us are voting for Obama.

107. Sounds like my family in places....
Father retired from the Air Force after 27 years, ended up a civil servant with the Navy. Died in 1986

Mother - Republican, voting for Obama

Oldest Brother, no service, voting for McCain.

2nd Oldest Brother, Army, Obama

3rd Oldest Brother, Air Force, Obama

Nephew, on his way to Army BT, Obama

Myself, Army JROTC, Air Force ROTC, hurt my knee bad enough that I couldn't pass the physical to get commissioned. Tried to join the reserves 10 years later, same deal. Tried AGAIN when the Army raised the age, same deal. For what it's worth, I'm voting for Obama.

52. I have good news to share this election cycle:
Edited on Wed Sep-24-08 11:21 AM by Erin Elizabeth
My father-in-law, who retired as an Army colonel and served two tours of duty in Vietnam is casting HIS FIRST DEMOCRATIC VOTE IN NOVEMBER FOR BARACK OBAMA!!!

Typing that gave me goose bumps all over again. We've been celebrating since he told us. He's finally disgusted with Republicans and is changing his party registration and everything!!!!!

Go father in law!!!!

Oh and my husband is an Army vet (Desert Storm was his thang) but he's always voted Dem.

His best friend is still in and is serving near Baghdad now, and we're keeping our fingers crossed that his absentee Obama vote is actually COUNTED.
