McCain Camp reacts to ABC News/WashPost poll giving Obama +9 lead: Poll is "is an outlier"

http://thepage.time.com/2008/09/24/polls-statistics-and-the-truth/

McCain polling czar Bill McInturff holds media call on latest data.

Suggests that the ABC News/WashPost poll released Wednesday is an outlier, and that if the orgs repeat the poll this week they would have McCain back in a statistical tie.

Adds: “We’re not seeing any volatility that’s been so great in public opinion” that would have produced such data.

Also asserts that in most battleground states it’s a margin-of-error race, says he has no clue how the debates will affect polling — “that’s what makes them exciting.”

Call in apparent response to some national and state survey stats suggesting an Obama semi-surge.

And/but Democratic super-pollster Mark Mellman:

“Some will suggest the turn (to Obama) is a reaction to the Wall Street meltdown. While that is certainly possible, in reality the trend toward Obama was firmly in place even before talk of bailouts dominated the headlines.”

2. And it will be an outlier until the next two polls come out. Then it will be average.

5. The other polls will catch up...
Particularly after Friday night. When McCain starts babbling incoherently, people will start seriously considering the prospect of a Palin Presidency. The polls over the weekend are going to show a tidal wave.

6. Which one might be the outlier?
http://www.realclearpolitics.com/epolls/2008/president/us/general_election_mccain_vs_obama-225.html

The 7 polls (with Research 2000) that show Obama leading, or the one that shows McCain leading.

Must be one that shows an Obama lead!

:sarcasm:

13. It probably is an outlier.
5% of all polls, even if conducted under perfect conditions will be complete crap.

15. WaPo/ABC poll is rated the #1 national poll among pollsters, so the McCain camp is blowing hot air.
They are running scared.

17. The Truth...
I don't want any polls or media leaning towards anyone. I
want the facts so we can really know what's going on and react
correctly. What is the best poll to watch? Any oppinions?

19. Go here ------------->
http://www.fivethirtyeight.com has the best analysis by a brilliant statistician named Nate Silver, whose track record on
predicting primary outcome margins were far better than any known pollster.

Take a cue from David Plouffe, Obama's number-crunching guru: ignore national polls. Only look at battleground state
polls' underlying numbers. Team Obama is constantly running internal polling on the states in question -- they never
pay attention to national polls.
