Republican source: Lesbian rumors ruined Condoleezza Rice's VP chances
There are valid reasons to not like Rice, but her sexual orientation is not one of them. If this is true, then McCain proves once again that he's a complete ass and unworthy of the office he holds and the office he wants.

http://pageoneq.com/news/2008/Republican_source_Lesbian_rumors_ruined_Condoleezza_Rices__0924.html (found this through google and not familiar with this source)

It was Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, not Alaska Governor Sarah Palin, that was the first choice for Senator John McCain's female running mate, according to a mid-level member of the Republican National Committee.

"Once Obama selected Biden" instead of Senator Hillary Clinton (D-NY), the source told journalist Ian Halperin, "they had this theory that Condi was the perfect candidate to put up against him. She's tough, conservative and a hawk, not to mention a football fanatic, which would be more than enough for white men.

"They never expected traditionally Democratic Blacks and women to vote for her in large numbers, but argued that if she could just sway 5-10% of Blacks and 10% of women to defect, it could be enough to tilt the election towards McCain in a number of crucial swing states. At this point, Palin still wasn't on anybody's radar screen."

McCain's inner circle argued "furiously" for Rice to be his running mate instead of one-time top contenders Mitt Romney, Mike Huckabee and Tim Pawlenty. However, according to the RNC source, persistent rumors about Rice's sexual orientation took her out of the running. "In Washington circles," the source said, "it's just assumed Rice is gay and nobody really cares. But in the glare of the media spotlight, those rumors were bound to get magnified a thousandfold and the mainstream media would have had an excuse to reveal the facts that would have caused conniption fits among the Republican base."

1. But what about the rumor that she was boinking Bush?
Or maybe that's what turned her off men?

That's what happens when your base is intolerant... you cut your own nose off to spite your face.

9. I give uncredited sources the same credibility I give Bush (none)
For someone trying to make himself as separate from Bush as possible, choosing Bush's Sec. of State as the VP candidate would have been an idiotic move for McCain regardless of who it was.

10. Plus it confirms what we already believed: Palin was only picked because of her gender
The man is 72 and the only qualification he wanted for his replacement was someone with a vagina.

8. And if she was "out and proud" all along, it would be a whole new ballgame
With tough consequences for Dems.

But RWers do not like gay people to be in the spotlight, they would prefer them to be cloistered and praying fervently to be cured of the Homosexual Disease (Palin falls into this camp).

13. There's no actual proof that Condoleeza is gay
But I guess in washington being unmarried and childless by fifty automatically makes you gay.

As for the fundies....they got over cheney's daughter (and her baby). You'd think they'd get over this.

Condi wasn't chosen because she was a Republican. The democrats would have chosen her as a candidate because to the Dems sexuality isn't such an issue.

Its true sexuality isn't a big deal to the democrats....but running a gay person as president or vice president? I can't see that happening in the near future.

They ultimately want to win. And it would be incredibly difficult to get people to accept a gay president/vice president. As great as Biden is, no way would he have been chosen for vp if he was openly gay.

I totally agree with your assertion. Palin was good for Mccain in the short run, but now people are seriously taking a look at her and are saying to themselves "WTF?!?!" Condi on the other hand would have been better long term for Mccain.

Edited on Wed Sep-24-08 12:10 PM by ClarkUSA
It was open knowledge that she was a lesbian and no one cared. After she was tapped to be SoS, she had to choose --
and she broke up with her longtime (politically forbidden) love to pursue what seemed like a promising and glittering
career.

How do I know? I know.

Yes, she's light years ahead of Palin but then most folks are. Rice is a dangerous person who needs to at least get far away from the Capital.

35. Honestly.. we probably dodged a bullet..
Condi would have been a hell of a lot tougher then Palin. She still has the same conservative credentials (as much as you can call it that), but she would have been more impressive on the "experience" front, and could have drawn both women and black voters.

I don't like any of her policies.. but she would have been tougher to fight off then Palen.. who is finally proving to be a joke. Condi would have held her own in a debate against Biden.. i don't think Palen will (even though the media will do their best to spin it as though she did).

Finally - if she IS gay or bi, why the HELL is she a hard working republican.. working against her own rights and her own self interests? I suppose you could say that about a lot of Republicans though, eh?
