Luke Russert's Experience With "Perils of Live Television": Says smart UVA kids are for Obama!

Luke Russert's Experience With "Perils of Live Television"

This morning on MSNBC.com's First Read blog, Luke Russert wrote about the "dumb comment" he made this morning following a report on NBC's Today show.

Russert (and the rest of the Today show) was in Virginia, and Russert's report focused on youth voters at the University of Virginia. After it aired, Lauer asked if UVA's affluent student body might make it the exception in political participation.

"The smartest kids in the state go there, so it's leaning a little bit towards Obama," said Russert.

"I MEANT to say that many of the kids who go to UVA are from affluent, highly educated households who are leaning Obama and hence their kids lean Obama," wrote Russert. "Plenty of smart college kids will vote for John McCain from UVA, and plenty of smart kids go to Virginia Tech or George Mason and they, too, could end up being big Obama voters."

He wrote it was "one of my first lessons in the perils of live television."

2. What he said was empirically correct, but not so well phrased
Fact is that Democrats poll best with highly educated voters and in academic communities like Charlottesville.

If you want to be as effective as your father.

4. I am very sorry his dad had a heart attack and died.
But WHY is this kid on national television and given any time in front of a camera?

He is the "Bindy Irwin" of journalism... only not as knowledgeable or as cute.

10. Amen. Couldn't have said it better. It's sort
of like GW Bush becoming President just because his father....oh, never mind.

8. LOL! I don't know that his clarification is any better.
I think the real lesson, for everybody, is that sons of famous people aren't always the chip off the old block, despite how they're being groomed to be.
