Coal pays well. Not many jobs do in WV and Ohio. And we're not talking about coal miners, we're also talking about the companies that service coal mines. You're looking at more than enough votes to swing the election.

Sounds like you only wanted to make trouble for people on this board and NOT to actually discuss the comment Joe Biden may or may not have made.

What I'd like to see is for Biden to come out and explain these statements that are being questioned and jumped on.

Rather than having the campaign rush to "proclaim Obama's support", which always sounds like an ooooops cover up, let Biden address it himself. If he misspoke, he's a big boy and can take responsibility for what he said. Clear the air. Tell the truth. Stop playing the game, in this instance.

And by the way, wbbygod, that's NOT an accurate portrayal of what he said. You're knee-jerk reacting and spinning it just like the opposition would do. AND refusing to provide links (a courtesy here at DU). Why?

We can't be so short sighted that we put the electoral votes of a couple of states above the well-being of the entire planet. Coal is one of the very worst pollutants, and is contributing tremendously to global warming. I am glad Biden is willing to stand up to the coal interests and take global warming seriously.

If you've followed Biden over the years you should already know that he's not always known for his clarity on point and it's something he needs to be careful of.

Or, you could just bury your head in the sands of overconfidence ala 2004 and then wonder what the hell happened after the election.

46. Here is Biden's position on clean coal -
What role does "clean coal" play in your vision for energy independence and climate security?

I don't think there's much of a role for clean coal in energy independence, but I do think there's a significant role for clean coal in the bigger picture of climate change. Clean-coal technology is not the route to go in the United States, because we have other, cleaner alternatives. But I would invest a considerable amount of money in research and development of clean-coal and carbon-sequestration technologies for export. China is building one new coal-fired plant per week. That's not going to change unless there's a fundamental change in technology, because they have about 300 years of dirty coal, and they're going to use it.

-------------------
So - we are both right. Biden is for it to export to other countries, but not for the US actually using it because there are cleaner alternatives.

I have lived in Pennsylvania for over 30 years and trust me, this comment will mean shit to the people in the Philadelphia region who, if anything, would applaud cleaner air environments. The people who care the most about Coal are in the regions of the state that would have gone McCain anyways so unless Philadelphia was annexed by Delaware then we have nothing to worry here.

As for West Virginia, we haven't won that state in ages and not winning it now. So notthing to worry about here.

Please, understand how the states work before making crazy statements like that. A better post would have been - How would Biden's comment on No New Coal affect states that produce Coal.

67. I'm sorry, but burning things to make energy is over.
Burning coal heats up the earth's atmosphere, causing global warming and disaster. Digging coal out of the ground destroys mountains and pollutes aquifers. If we're the "best country in the world" then we need to develop better technologies for energy and better jobs for people than risking their lives digging coal out of the ground.

I agree 100% with Joe Biden. Coal hasn't helped the poor people of West Virginia and Pennsylvania. They're worse off now than they've ever been. Coal puts money in the pockets of a few CEOs at a terrible cost to everyone else. Enough.
