McCain is "terrified" and "fundamentally unsuited for the presidency" (updated)
Edited on Wed Sep-24-08 05:27 PM by ProSense
It's certainly supposed to be. We've had campaigns, debates, ads, speeches, and fundraisers during wars and natural disasters, but we've never had a candidate who didn't think he could handle campaigning during a crisis before.

McCain, in other words, apparently wants to call a time-out. I don't blame him, necessarily, but here's the thing: presidents don't get to call time-outs. They don't get to put some responsibilities on hold while they tend to other responsibilities. They need to be resilient, and put their duties ahead of the distractions and fatigue.

McCain, for lack of a better word, appears terrified this afternoon -- terrified of losing, terrified of the race slipping away, terrified of a debate, terrified of events unfolding beyond his control.

And so, scared, he panicked, and made yet another rash and cynical decision.

John McCain is fundamentally unsuited for the presidency.
Why he seems so anxious to remind us of this fact is a mystery.

September 24, 2008

IF AT FIRST YOU DON'T SUCCEED.... When the crisis on Wall Street began, and the markets began tanking nine days ago, the very first message from John McCain was, "The fundamentals of our economy are strong." That didn't work, and McCain dropped the line.

His second message was that he wanted to see a commission investigate how and why the crisis happened. That made McCain appear confused, so he dropped that line, too.

His third message was in opposition to the AIG bailout. That didn't last, and McCain took the opposite position 24 hours later.

His fourth message was to fire Christopher Cox from the Securities and Exchange Commission. That turned out to be ridiculous, and McCain dropped the line, too.

His fifth message was to blame lobbyists, influence peddlers, and the collapse of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. That became problematic given the lobbyists and former Fannie/Freddie officials on McCain's payroll.

McCain has simply gone from one ridiculous notion to another, flailing around, looking desperately for something coherent to say. Now McCain has come up with yet another stunt: suspend the campaign, delay the debate, and head back to his day job for the first time since April.

It's hard to imagine anyone being so gullible as to find McCain's gimmick credible. Candidates who take the political process seriously don't behave this way. Leaders don't behave this way.

Josh Marshall had this gem: "Isn't this the campaign equivalent of faking an injury when you're down late in the 4th quarter?"

Why, yes. Yes it is.

Flipping Out in Times of Crisis

His leadership of his campaign has been anything but stable. From his choice of a first term Alaskan governor who he didn't even vet, to the total collapse of his campaign in 2007, and to his complete stonewalling of the press, McCain has demonstrated that he is completely unsteady. But it his reaction to international events which really scares me. Pat Barry presciently wrote yesterday:

2. Busted! McCain lied about meeting with key advisors

High-larious

By Josh Marshall

It seems that today during the time Barack Obama was waiting to hear back from Sen. McCain about their planned joint statement -- and while McCain says he was meeting with key advisors and becoming increasingly concerned about the financial crisis facing the country -- he was actually holding a special meeting with Lady Lynn Forester de Rothschild, the expat international financier who once supported Hillary Clinton but now is supporting McCain because she thinks Obama is "elitist".

4. Anyone who thinks this is
a brilliant move is desperately trying to help salvage McCain's credibility.

I doubt his stability.

7. "The feeling grows that John McCain is not fully in control of himself."

(Updated) McCain: I Be Presidential, So Grab A Bucket & Help Me Bail, Barack My Man

September 24th, 2008
By SHAUN MULLEN, TMV Columnist

As noted here, last week was the game changer in the 2008 presidential campaign and that finally seems to have sunk in this afternoon as John McCain announced that he was suspending campaigning to help fix the economy, urged Barack Obama to do the same and, oh, wants to hold off on that first debate.

The McCain-Sarah Palin campaign is imploding. After campaign spokesmouths criticized one national poll earlier in the day showing Obama and Joe Biden pulling away as an outlier, Fox News‘ own latest poll confirmed the fact that the race has again become the Democrats to lose.

The feeling grows that John McCain is not fully in control of himself. That his party animal past and legendary inflexibility may be catching up to him. That he doesn’t have the mental agility to stay sharp, let alone face down Obama, and that he is unsteady without Palin at his side.

Meanwhile, the post-convention bounce and Palin boomlet have ended with a thud and the Alaska governor’s negatives have intersected with with her positives. Snippets from Palin’s third interview, this one with CBS News’s Katie Couric, are making the rounds and already are provoking derision, while McCain himself has not had a press availability since mid-August.

So what’s a campaign that is all smoke (and mirrors) and no fire to do?

Throw a Hail Mary pass as it did with the unvetted Palin.

8. McCain Camp Proposes Postponing Debate To Oct 2, Postponing Biden-Palin Debate As Well

McCain Camp Proposes Postponing Debate To Oct 2, Postponing Biden-Palin Debate As Well

by Hunter
Wed Sep 24, 2008 at 03:42:47 PM PDT

According to CNN, McCain's camp is now proposing that the debate be postponed by moving it to into the time and venue of the vice presidential debate, scheduled for Oct. 2nd in St. Louis. The Biden-Palin debate would then be itself rescheduled to happen later on.

So, that'd be delaying two debates, not just one. And what are the odds that the vice presidential debate would manage to somehow never get rescheduled, given the McCain camp's intensive efforts to keep her away from reporters and questioners?
