They want to POSTPONE election theory
a friend of mine who teaches political science just called me and said the cancellation of Friday debate and the VP debates are steps 1 and 2 tow wards declaring a national crisis and canceling election.

not to sound paranoid but keep an eye on how this plays out

NOTHING suprises me anymore

...but it does occur to me that some in the Bush maladministration might be wondering about using the economic crisis, if it worsens, to impose Directive 51.

2. I think the White House has surely wargamed what they would do if the economy collapsed
One of the options would probably involve martial law. I don't think we're anywhere near that point yet, but I'm sure it's crossed Dick Cheney's mind.

The election cannot be postponed without an act of Congress.

Per Article II of the constitution:

The Congress may determine the time of choosing the electors, and the day on which they shall give their votes; which day shall be the same throughout the United States.


Per Title 3 of the United States Code, that date is the first Tuesday in November.

Only an act of Congress can alter that.
