The simple reason they want this deal done now |
|
(I can't find my source, so if an intrepid poli sci or biz student can help here, I'd appreciate it)
If the Dow is down for September, the party-in-power loses the WH. If it's up, they win. Right now, it's down for the month, but if a deal gets done, the market may rocket into positive territory.
9/2 11,516
9/24 10,825
They have 6 days (calendar days -- 2 of those are weekend days) to get the market up 691 points.

2. If they declare martial law, the money wouldn't be worth much... |
|
...unless they went out and bought gold or foreign currency with it.

7. Why's Bush posting the Army in the U.S. for crowd control on October 1? |
|
It's the start of something.

8. Strangely, I heard a righty talker making the same argument |
|
I don't think it's as sinister as everyone thinks. I think the Army wants to rotate a division through North America to make up for all of the National Guardsmen in Iraq. I think the concern is that, in the event of a large scale national emergency, no one is here minding the store.
I hear you. 3 hours ago, I was convinced George was going to suspend the election. He didn't.
Here's another thought. Look around the board; there are plenty of ex-mil here. This should support the notion that they are not all Cheney clones. While I want (and expect) the Army to obey orders, the officers swore an oath to defend the Constitution. I honestly don't see them going along with a coup d' etat.

6. There may or may not be a crisis in the markets |
|
There certainly is a crisis on main street. There are a boatload of foreclosures and houses that have lost a lot of value.

4. It's not gonna happen... Now how, no way. |
|
The market is too volatile, even if this POS gets through, there is no way that the market can show a gain, and hold it. If this passes on Friday, they have only two days. Other big companies could go under, and that's only in the US market.
Not to mention, wth all the haggling that is going on on the hill, I don't see this passing by Tuesday. There is too much opposition on both sides for this thing to pass in anything less than two weeks, and that's only if it's the only thing on their plates.
