5. The man honoured Dixie veterans of the Civil War...
Anybody who's ever doubted that he's a racist fuck needs to learn some history.

22. History is rarely as straightforward or simple as we'd like it to be.
Edited on Thu Sep-25-08 08:55 AM by Spider Jerusalem
My 3rd great-grandfather fought for the Confederacy. He was a poor farmer from Clayton County, Georgia who enlisted in the Georgia militia in the spring of 1864, when he was 46 years old and well past military age, when Sherman was on his march to the sea, and he did it for one reason: to defend his home and family. He was not, so far as I know, political, nor did he own slaves, and there were thousands like him who fought for the Confederacy. I can't consider the situation and say I might not do the same thing myself.

Clinton is also a Southerner, from a former Confederate state; the South has an uneasy and vexed relationship with its past, but it seems to me that it's possible to honour men like my great-great-great grandfather, who took up arms not in the service of some racist ideology, but in defence of their homes against an invading army (and that the cause they were nominally supporting by doing so was morally bankrupt and wrong doesn't make their individual actions so).

51. Of Course I Would Have Fought For The Army Of The Potomac
But Sherman with his "total war" theory often didn't discriminate between civilian and military targets.

Would you if you'd been a Georgia farmer in the path of Sherman's march? What would you have done then?

27. Who did? McCain or Clinton?
Also, I would say that there is not a necessary link between honoring Confederate Veterans and racism - though there is most certainly a correlation. As has been said on Iraq and Vietnam, you can't confuse the warriors for the war.

37. Bill Clinton isn't racist
Edited on Thu Sep-25-08 09:07 AM by LostinVA
Even though I think he's going bonkers this election cycle, he isn't a racist, nor does he WANT a Republican to win... although at this point, McCain winning would doom teh Repubs even more, just because the next President will be a one-termer who is DOOMED from Day One. I'd prefer a two-term Dem. Yet another thing that ass Bush has spoiled.

And, what's up with inviting McLame to his event? Did he invite Obama? If not, why? I've about had it with Bill, and if Hillary thinks I'm letting her off the hook for not stopping Bill, she's nuts.

19. More ridiculous, half-assed, tinfoil bullshit from Clinton-haters
This should be a day for roasting McCain over the coals for his cowardice in running away from the Obama debate, where he knows he's going to get his ass handed to him.

Instead, we get a sad sack of Clinton-haters...a group that seems to have more numbers here than they do at the free republic...whining and pissing their tired, whiny critiques.

Bill and Hillary have been campaigning heavily for Obama this entire time now. By definition, that IS speaking out against McCain, Palin, and their backwards policies.

did meet with Clinton to discuss Bill's appearances on Barack's behalf. Do you really think he's gullible to accept "help" from someone who wants to see him defeated? You are allowing your hatred of Clinton to cloud your judgment.
