Irony Alert -- McCain makes campaign speech to suspend campaign
McCain just made a classic stump speech at the Global forum to announce that he is suspending his campaign because the situation is too serious for politics right now.

Hmmmm.....The phrase "trying to have cake and eat it too" comes to mind.

8. Maybe if Bill Clinton had any backbone or love for the party left, he would call him out on it

9. Good catch
He makes his case before saying that he - for the good of the country - was suspending his campaign. This is not LBJ really suspending and ending his campaign to deal with negotiations to end the Vietnam War, this is a stunt.

He is joining Bush in demanding that complex legislation be written overnight - even though there are accounts that Paulson and all spent 4 months to produce their plan, rather than work with Congress on a plan using the resources of the Congress as well as those of the executive branch.

Even if people bought the need for McCain to return to DC for a few says, that could be done without his photo op today. I wish Bill Clinton yesterday would have issued a statement that he would understand if McCain went straight to DC given how he felt about how needed his presence was. In fact, he could have left for DC mid afternoon when he made this decision - not wasting the rest of the day issuing platitudes about the sacrifice he was making. He could have been in DC a full day earlier. If he could spare that immediate 24 hours, why was Friday night different?

Also, returning to DC for a couple of days is not usually billed as "suspending" a campaign. There is also no connection between whether ads are run and whether the bill is written faster or better.

He is a political hack.
