It was an election year. That month congress was debating the Iraqi resolution which ultimately led us into war. There was a terrorist attack which killed many people in Bali on 10/14 and on the very day that McCain hosted SNL (famously singing a Barbara Streisand song), the "Beltway Sniper" killed yet another victim.

Yet, McCain found time to fit in a stint as host of SNL, and yet he now tells us there is no time for humor in a campaign nor is there time to debate in a campaign.
