2. I don't doubt they spent this much money, but how?
$5.5 million would be a fair sized investment for a plant expansion. I'm curious how the bill gets so high so fast.

7. They've built a huge tent for the media and has installed new cell phone and
internet communications infrastructure at the arena where it will be held. Plus, there have been security guards patrolling the area for weeks.

10. Plus a lot of landscaping work at Ole Miss
The entire city of Oxford has been sprucing up for its turn in the spotlight.

I work in Jackson, MS, and at lunch with a Repub friends today (many of whom are Ole Miss alums), let me tell you they were PISSED at McCain. It won't change their votes, of course, but they're plenty pissed.

8. Saw an article about that last night detailing some of the costs.
Barricades, bleachers, security, platforms??? Can't recall all of them, but Ole Miss said it would certainly hurt them financially if the debate isn't held. I think they should sue McCain's campaign for this amount if he doesn't show up and they lose money.

9. I was born there and graduated from Ole Miss. If ever a state
needed the exposure and didn't need to spend money needlessly, it's Mississippi. And Ole Miss actually has a fantastic Political Sciende department, which helped me cement my switch from republican to democrat back in the 80s.

In addition, their pharmacy school is really good. And there are a couple of major biochem grants coming down the pipeline that could benefit the state greatly.

I'm betting that Barber is really pissed off with McCain right now.

20. It might not go "Blue" but there will be a lot of good
press about Obama showing up when they have all that money invested, rooms books, and potential revenue from restaurants hanging in the balance from an area that really needs it.

"Ironically enough, if John McCain goes through with his threat to skip the foreign policy debate scheduled for this Friday for the sake of prolonging and complicating the ongoing negotiations over the Paulson bailout package, it may end up creating another distressed asset -- the University of Mississippi's investment in Friday's face-off. Officials from Ole Miss told ABC News today that a cancellation would be "devastating" to the University -- and that a postponement might not be possible:

Andrew Mullins, special assistant to University Chancellor Robert Khayat, told ABC News that the Ole Miss campus has been transformed to accommodate the candidates and the press. Road blocks are in place on campus and in the community and the debate television set for the candidates has already been constructed. He said the university has spent roughly five and half million dollars getting ready for the debate.

Mullins also noted that if the Commission on Presidential Debates asks the campus to hold the debate at a later date, he is not sure the university would be able to accommodate them.

"It's huge. You cannot just say that you're not going to do this thing," Mullins said. "I don't have any idea whether we do the debate" at a later date. " probably wouldn't do it."

12. Oh there will be a debate - even if it's Obama doing a Town Hall
And Mississippi has a hot senate race with their former governor going for Trent Lott's old seat.
