Lumbering toward Election Day burdened by the crushing unpopularity of President Bush, John McCain has yet to break through in three states that his campaign says are among his prime pickup targets, according to the latest Allstate/National Journal battleground poll.
The survey, which polled voters in Michigan, New Hampshire, and Pennsylvania, was concluded less than 48 hours before McCain suspended his campaign, declaring that he needed to focus on the nation's financial crisis and challenging Democrat Barack Obama to do the same. Such a dramatic move is a gamble, but Obama had been gaining ground and the gambit could prove appealing to independent voters whom McCain must attract if he is to shift any of these states into the GOP's column.
Although Obama cannot capture the White House without winning at least 18 more electoral votes than John Kerry claimed as their party's 2004 nominee, the senator from Illinois appears likely to flip several of Bush's 2004 states. According to an analysis of recent public polls by Pollster.com, Obama is leading in Colorado, Iowa, and New Mexico -- states that would collectively drop the Republicans' Electoral College tally from 286 in 2004 to 265 this year -- five short of the 270 it takes to win.
And that analysis does not include Florida, Indiana, Nevada, Ohio, and Virginia, red states where most polls show McCain leading but being pushed hard by Obama.
