Palin: Alaska’s proximity to Russia ‘certainly does’ give me foreign policy experience.»

During the second half of her interview with Gov. Sarah Palin (R-AK), Katie Couric gave Palin a chance to defend her previous claims that Alaska’s proximity to Russia gives her foreign policy experience. Palin lamented the fact that the press had “mocked” the notion, adding, “Our next door neighbors are foreign countries — they’re in the state that I am the executive of.”

After the interview concluded, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) canceled an appearance on the Late Show with David Letterman to sit for an unscheduled interview with Couric.

Update: Yglesias notes, "Moscow is closer to New York than it is to Anchorage. And yet nobody would say that David Paterson has extensive foreign policy experience thanks to his proximity to Russia."

Most Alaskans I know are hating on her now for presenting us in such a bad light on the national stage. She's a disaster. I'm counting the hours until our rally on Saturday. I want to see thousands of angry Alaskans.

9. I can imagine
I personally love Alaska. Went there 10 years ago, traveled the Dalton Highway all the way to Prudeau Bay and back. She makes me not want to return.

I'm trying to think where it was I saw that teleprompter with "nuclear" spelled out that way so she wouldn't make the mistake of saying "nucular."

And yet I never heard of this woman until her name came up among the VP hopefuls; likewise, I attended a lecture about my professor's experience on a number of think tanks dealing with issues pertaining to Russian politics and Russia's relations with the rest of the world and meeting with Putin, Medvedev, and other high-ranking Russian officials, and believe me, the issues he discussed during the lecture and the questions that came up during the 40 minute QA had nothing to do with Sarah Palin and were so far outside of what most would perceive to be her depth that she would have been ridiculed by everyone in the room, including the kids who were there to respect our dear professor.

Palin has demonstrated ABSOLUTELY NO UNDERSTANDING of Russia's role in modern geopolitics, Moscow's relationship with Washington and with the world, and of internal Russian politics; nonetheless, had she been asked any serious follow-up questions about these issues or these concepts in her interviews, Inhannity, Limpballs, and all those other reactionary pigs would be spending the next 6 months pissing and moaning about the media's librulcomm13p1nk0f@gBAIS!!!1!11!!!!!!!!
