Obama adviser predicts McCain will show up at the debate tomorrow night.
Obama Adviser Predicts McCain Will Show Up

By Michael Falcone
One of Senator Barack Obama’s senior advisers predicted that Senator John McCain would retreat from his desire to delay the first presidential debate, and meet Mr. Obama on the stage in Oxford, Miss., on Friday night.

“I actually think he’s going to come to the debate,” the adviser, Robert Gibbs, told reporters in Washington on Thursday.

And echoing a talking point that Senator Obama used in his press conference on Thursday, Mr. Gibbs added: “I think he will decide that a president is capable of doing more than one thing at a time.”

Mr. Gibbs, who advises Senator Obama on communications strategy, also engaged in some classic expectations setting.

1. I think he has to.
Even Patrick Buchanan said on Hardball that the only reason he wouldn't show is because he simply does not want to debate Obama.

3. If McPain doesn't show and Bob Barr does, then Obama should debate Barr.
Barr would probably make more sense than McPain, anyway -- nonsense, but still more sense.

6. That would be like 1980 in reverse
Where Carter didn't show up, Reagan and John Anderson did, and Reagan debated Anderson.

4. I don't know that it really needs to be postponed....
but I guess I don't think it's that big a deal. It's not like other debates haven't been changed....

I just think the McCain campaign is very impulsive and that's kind of weird.

5. Why would you even consider it a reasonable idea?
That makes no sense to me - just because McCain is a coward - that's a good reason?

7. how is he a coward? That makes no sense. He's actually not a bad debater
from what I have seen. Personally I have never taken any debates that seriously. But that's just me, I hate watching them.

It just seems like some bizarre strategy that his campaign has....

...that seems odd to me.

I'm a mental health professional, so I'm basically sympathetic to everyone's plight... occupational hazard.... ;)

I always manage to see things from the other person's perspective, even if I don't agree with them.

10. I think Gibbs will be proven prophetic
because I'm not sure that being a no-show at the debate is a risk that McCain wants to take.
