55. McCain can't hold babies because of his arm situation, can you imagine if something happened
while he was holding a baby up and he lost the ability to keep it up? Wait, that didn't come out right! Just don't hold any babies McCain.

Barack looked so sweet with those kids. And, I LOVE the way he is with Michelle. It is so clear that he adores her.

This man understands baby interaction! I'm serious--he's responding to the child, not the camera and that's why the babies are cool with him. Very cool images.

9. this one touched me the most
It, just like Barack's nomination, says we've come some way in ending racism in America.
This little white boy, with that tight hug, demonstrates genuine affection for this wonderful AA man! It touches my heart and gives me hope.

10. Kids under the age of 2 have very "honest" reactions to
people. They naturally gravitate to good guys and shy from people they instinctively don't trust. They seem to not just gravitate to Barack, but to cling to him, as they would to a true protector. I did my thesis on Proxemic Behavior (the study of how humans physically relate to both their environment and other humans) for my Master's. These children are rapt, open, and completely connecting to him. Can't fake that for anything. He's not just a good guy, he's a BEST guy!

45. That's true, but it's only a part of the reason for their reactions.
You'd likely see a lot of crying, turning away, reaching for Mommy if the troll were involved! Similar to the pic with Shrub downthread.

Eek!

My husband says that's why our baby girl responds better to me than him. Never mind that I'm her mother and carried her 9 months inside and she responds to my heartbeat and body noises... Nope, hubby says it's because I'm better looking than him.

(FWIW, I think my husband is rather handsome. :) )

44. It is utterly amazing stuff!
It's partly related to studies of body language, but goes far beyond into behavioral norms based on societal differences, territoriality, familial patterns, and use of space. Things like why we always sit in the same spot on a train or bus, or choose the same chair at the dinner table, even though there are 5 other chairs - none of which are occupied! It served as a foundation for my career in HR/Staffing consultation - there's no better measure of performance than human behavior. People usually hate to be interviewed by me, but I've rarely made a hiring/placement/removal decision that didn't work out exactly as expected.

98. A few months ago our paper had a big article about
Obama and kids. Teachers were startled at how into elections kids suddenly were... and they were focusing on kids pre-school to 6th. Several had fake elections for the first time because kids were so curious. (Most used cartoon characters)
And it was all about Obama. They loved Obama. It wasn't all parental influence...it happened in republican districts, it happened with kids whose parents were for Mccain or Clinton. Kids talk Obama, draw Obama, sing Obama.

They did note that in 6th grades there was usually a small group of girls who were all Hillary. (Hope they haven't gone M<cCain even if they can't vote)

The teachers and parents had never seen anything like it. Wish I had saved the article, it was very long so obviously had more info than this.

I love parents stories too, toddlers who become quiet and watched mesmerized when Obama ais speaking on TV. There was a guy on Kos who took his 4 year old to a fundraiser. When Obama was leaving she called out his name and he picked her up and talked to her for awhile. She calls it the happiest day of her life and she had recently been to Disneyland. She liked the day Obama held her and asked her name better.

Kids do recognize something and Obama has what it is.

109. You can tell he actually HELD his little girls
when they were babies, that says a lot. He appears to be more than a sperm donor. Even today, too many men think their duty as a parent ended with sperm donation. In many families, the dad may be in the house but he isn't part of the family. They didn't coin the term soccer mom for nothing.

61. I love these Obama baby threads!
And this is from a person uncomfortable with babies. I'm afraid of holding them until they're a certain age, it just makes me nervous. I'm afraid I'm not supporting their heads the right way, I'm afraid they'll feel my fear... and I'm a woman (no children, obviously!). But they never cry when I hold them... they lay in my arms more relaxed than I am. I guess they sense that it's just nervousness, not that I don't want them. I love babies - and oddly enough they seem to like me! - but I usually shy away from holding them. That's too bad, too because they're such a joy! I connect much better when they're walking age.

69. I have a solft spot for men who love children
men who have not had children are excused as sometimes they just don't know. (some of them do, two of my childless male friends are head over hills crazy about their friends' and family's kids).

Kids are fascinating for those of us who are curious about life and what makes us tick. You get to see the part of your life you missed. (because you were too young to remember).

70. here's another wonderful one....
which to me shows the empathetic and respectful stance that Barack has with babies...
the baby is leaning back, checking him out very carefully, and Barack
is taking the baby's lead and leaning back as well...
allowing the baby to set the distance in accordance with his comfort level.

79. That's very powerful.
You know, even as an adult, I'd a comforting hug from Barack Obama. :)

Listening to him speak is like a comforting hug. It's almost as if he's saying directly to me, "Hey, it's going to be okay."

86. Forty Years From Now,
Anyone who is the kid in one of those pictures will probably be SOOOOOOOOO proud!

Imagine having a picture of yourself as a baby in the arms of a US president.

I would cherish that picture for the rest of my life.

114. Ooh, I recognize that. That was taken at Prince Puckler's ice cream shop in Eugene, Ore.
Edited on Mon Sep-29-08 07:24 PM by Oregonian
That's right on the edge of the U. of O. campus. They make fabulous ice cream and mark the staff's favorite flavors on the display case -- and Obama's (mint chip) is marked as well ("Obama's favorite"). There is a photo of Obama with the staff hanging on the wall, as well as a framed newspaper clipping of his visit to the store. If you're ever in Eugene -- go there! :9
