Sarah Palin gets a Cheesesteak and doesn't even go to famous Cheesesteak places or heart of Philly
http://www.tonylukes.com/directions.htm

http://abclocal.go.com/wpvi/story?section=news/politics&id=6418537

Real politicians go to Pat's or Gino's for Cheesesteaks - those are the legendary cheesesteak places in the heart of south Philadelphia. But god forbid you put Sarah Palin in the heart of South Philly they'll boo the bejesus out of her so they found some no name place off Delaware Avenue.

And yes Gino's is the "english only" cheesesteak place but you still have Pat's OR you could go to south street to Jim's.

What a loser and what a bad photo-op for Sarah. That says alot that she didn't go into south philly, all politicians go into south philly to either Pat's or Gino's. It's tradition and she couldn't do it.

1. cheesesteaks are terrible.
just because its a tradition (an awful one) doesn't mean a politician should follow it.

4. Wrong!
Their cheesesteaks and pretzels are the best!

Hey -- while driving through the city, I saw women with OBAMA signs all over the Roosevelt Boulevard area (NE Philly). Now I know why!!!

Their signs were "WOMEN FOR OBAMA" and "MAMAS for OBAMA."

Smallish group -- but it was one of the most dangerous roads in the city!!! Brave souls.

27. It's all about the roll

Not mozarella - provolone, American, or Cheez-Wiz.

Sauteed, thinly sliced white onions.

Quite frankly, people can argue about Pat's/Jim's/Geno's/D'Allesandro... I prefer the carts.

Mike's cart at the corner of 16th and Market is fine.

35. The roll is part of it
It's the grease and roll combo. The grease can't be heavy and it can't make the roll soggy.

How can anyone not go to S. Philly and not get a real cheesesteak there? My only complaint is the parking which can be atrocious. .

50. I had to give it up...

I had one just about every day for a decade.

Finally got my cholesterol checked - my doctor told me I was going to die if I didn't make some changes.

I cut out the meat and cheese a couple of months ago, and have eaten more oats than your average racing stable. I'm down 10 pounds and feel great.

Once I get where I'm supposed to be, I'll go back to maybe one a month.

It's thinly sliced steak sauted in oil
with onion slices....

Sure its greasy, but its damn tasty,
and a cardiac on a good crusty Italian roll...

43. My problem with Gino's now is the "English only" thing ... because ...
and I'm not Italian ... but When I grew-up in Philly, if you went to Gino's, there were always folks in their speaking Italian.

That whole area was Italian American. And lots of folks in that neighborhood spoke ONLY Italian.

The guys I knew from that neighborhood were proud of it ... and for those Italian Americans who didn't still speak Italian, well, they made fun of them for forgetting where they came from.

And ... if you went into Gino's an spoke in Italian, they greeted you like you were long lost family.

I bet they still do.

It's been awhile since I've been down to 9th Street and like others, prefer the vendor stands for cheesesteakfriedonions!!! LOL IMHO, cheese wiz is nasty on a cheesesteak anyway. :P My great-grandparents grew up in South Philly before the Italians came in. Still alot of AAs around but more on the west side of Broad now.

61. Ok, to clarify ... the Philly CheeseSteak war is between Pat's and Geno's ....
Not Pat's and "Gino's".

But the original post refers to Pat's versus "Gino's" and so maybe THAT reference is incorrect (and I should have been more careful on the spelling -- but in my defense, it has been some years since I lived there).

Geno's has the English Only policy as I described.

On some common ground ... I agree that none of the well know joints is really "best" anymore. Some of those on South street received added publicity for being near the VET and so that they got on TV during Monday night football.

But like some one above points out ... the roll is critical. Fresh Amorosa rolls. Almost anything else falls apart, and tastes like crap.

As for chesse and toping, it depends. As a teen, at 2 in the morning, after a night in the bars ... WIZ plus WIZ fries was best (use the roll to wipe up extra cheese from the fries).

But during the day ... either American or Provolone, agree on the onions.

And the occasional Pizza Steak, or Cheesesteak hoagie (but never with Mayo).

generation of his family in the cheesesteak business and he is still at the Reading Terminal Market. Tony Lukes is a cheap chain and unfortunately he will be moving into the Reading Terminal Market - a political thing with Rick of rick's Cheesesteaks. Rick will be moving out to the Main Line and I hope he will do quite well but I will miss his cheesesteaks at the Market.

Tony Lukes is to cheesesteaks like sparking cider is to champagne - a pale imitation.

agrees - Tony Luke's roast pork rocks. For cheese steaks he prefers Steve's Prince of Steaks in NE Philly. I like the local sandwich place around the corner from my house just outside of the city.

But Lynnsin is absolutely correct - if you're running for office you go to Geno's or Pat's in South Philly.

And one more thing - you don't get food from a cart unless you don't get too skeeved if you find something weird in the food. I've got some stories, but I won't go there.

Maybe South Street is where the liberals go... yep, if you're getting a cheesesteak, it's Pat's, ferchrissakes. And Gino's, being the English only hangout, is way off the list.

It would have been a hoot to have Sarah go to TLA for the midnight show of Eraserhead. It is about a baby after all...
