Vice Presidential Debate Expectations: Obama Camp Calls Palin "Terrific Debater"

“Politico's Mike Allen writes:

"We've looked at tapes of Gov. Palin's debates, and she's a terrific debater," Plouffe told reporters on a conference call. "She has performed very, very well. She's obviously a skilled speaker. We expect she'll give a great performance next Thursday." <...>

"She's obviously prepping this weekend in Pennsylvania," Plouffe continued. "Anyone who watches any of her previous debates would be impressed by her debating skills."

Obama national press secretary Bill Burton added: "What's missing is knowing where she stands on a lot of the important issues that will come up at the debate. Preparing to debate against someone who is really largely unknown, who's spent so much time preparing for the debate, will be a real challenge.

"She's not out there on the stump that much. She's not doing a whole lot of interviews. So she's spending a whole lot of time -- hours and hours a day, apparently -- preparing for this debate. And we suspect that she'll come in fighting form." Cont…

3. Don't laugh so quickly - she's actually good at debating.

Unfortunately the only full video I can find is here:
http://gregransom.com/prestopundit/2008/09/sarah-palin-debates-tony-knowl.html

but there are also snippets all over youtube.

Granted, she'll be out of her league as far as subject matter goes on some questions on Thursday, but she has an easy style that will allow her to do somewhat well - it just depends on the questions. Unfortunately without the give-and-take format of the Presidential debates, there won't be as much opportunity to trip her up, not even as much as in her recent interviews.

Nonetheless, I predict a Biden win, but I doubt she'll make as much of an ass of herself as she has lately. And never, ever underestimate your enemy.

12. You seen her on charlie rose with Napolitano?
http://www.charlierose.com/shows/2007/10/12/2/a-conversation-with-governors-janet-napolitano-sarah-palin

She looks fairly foolish when stacked against someone a little more substantial then her competition in thos governors debates.

and she's still an idiot. I'm all for upping her expectations for the public, but damn, what a dullard.

29. That was pretty bad... she heads straight into talking points
but she shows no knowledge of anything of which she speaks. She just cannot compete on the same level as her more intelligent and more experienced peers.

5. She actually did pretty good in her Alaska Governor debates. They played them on
Cspan a couple of weeks ago. The McCain campaign has seriously undermined her confidence and she seems much worse now. It reminds me of how much dumber Bush has gotten throughout his Presidency - and we thought he was an idiot to begin with but he has gotten worse.

Here is a review of the Cspan replay of the AK debate from TIME's Swampland blog with Karen Tumulty.

27. I agree. During the Alaska debates she did the right wing thing well.
Responding with platitudes toward issues raised, slipping in the proper buzz words in each reply.

That's why the Katie Couric interview surprised me. I'd seen her do okay in the Alaska stuff on CSpan.

30. Right. I don't want her expectations lowered so much so that if she doesn't
literally trip and knock herself out that she is seen as a big winner. I'm worried that is where we are at now.

7. Palin debating
I heard Biden say something similar to that on Friday after the debate. Is there no one but me who thinks that there is a huge difference between Alaska and it's small population, with limited problems to understand and the VP job? I've met Joe Biden and heard him speak and take questions. IMHO they are setting her up this way for old Joe to lower the hammer.

8. We're in for a real ass-kicking on Thursday. She's definitely just been pretending so far.
I imagine it's because she doesn't want to make those media types feel inadequate, so she's hiding her brilliance.

13. Just FYI
Here's some YouTube links to her in the Alaska gubernatorial debates. She is ifteb quick-witted and articulate here, dealing with issues she knows well. Indeed, I have no problem with the idea that she may be quite OK as governor of that state; while I strongly disagree with her on everything from environmental to social policy, Alaska seems to be fairly conservative and I respect Alaskans' choice of someone that reflects their own views even if I don't like it.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mQ_tCVnTfJI <- bridge to nowhere
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y1-B-OyQ-KI <- on same-sex benefits, abortion and assisted suicide

Very much the mix of moral certainty and evasive answers we've picked up in interviews so far. My guess is that she'll start out cautiously in the VP debate, gain some confidence as it goes on and she gets into the swing of things, and then waltz off a cliff about an hour in.

25. We just don't have the intellectual capacity to understand Palin's brilliance.
Why, she's probably the most intelligent, commanding, razor-sharp intellect that has ever graced any electoral competition anywhere. Obama had to go to Columbi and Harvard to get his degrees, whereas Palin went to 5 different universities. FIVE! Clearly two universities weren't enough to provide the intellectual stimulation required by her spectacular mind.

I'm trembling in fear, I tell ya. How on earth is Joe Biden going to compete with this political giant?

9. Paloin did at least 22 debates in the AK Governor's race
as per http://gregransom.com/prestopundit/2008/09/sarah-palin-debates-tony-knowl.html

I couldn't stomach more than a few minutes of it.

15. After watching this vid I just got MORE PISSED OFF!! Andrew Halcro should have been Governor!!
Dear God what was that mess?

I reached up to 7 minutes and was so livid I could spit. Halcro was hitting the answers on the head and he was on top of the issues. When asked about issues that needed to be addressed more...Halcro talked about domestic violence and substance abuse---from the Crystal Meth capital of America and the highest rate of rape and abuse in the nation. Yet, he was passed over for a twit who talked about Hunting and Fishing rights?! So people could hunt and fish more----they're more important than the livelihood of the citizenry.

What the fuckin' fuck?! What the f'in hell happened here?! Andrew Halcro was hitting things out of the ball park. Knowles sounded like an eratic buffoon who didn't hear the questions. Palin was so self-interested I felt like smacking her and she her answers were so weak I was appalled. While Halcro had such a clean debate style that made sense and he reminded me of Obama.

He really gives me the feel of the good looking young Regan guy who acts similar to Obama. REasonable, knowledgeable and cares about the damn people. Fuck people. AK needed a clue and I hate this vid and despise Palin.

20. "Lord make a way ..."
:eyes: The only challenge is for Biden to "dumb down" enough in order to understand Palin.

I'm suggesting Palin's IQ hovering around 95 (ok good day 100) but her intellectual curiosity is 10 on a 100 scale.

Poor Joe Biden, with an IQ, IMNSHO, of over 150 must guard against "looking confused" while trying to process the meaning of Palin's rhetoric.

The following phase explains Palin's entire persona: "Willfully ignorant and damn proud of it!"

24. This is the equivalent of the McCain camp saying......
...... that Obama would surge to a 20 pt lead after the DNC (knowing of course he wouldn't) thereby trying to make it look like he had failed.

We ALL know he is saving the 20 pt surge until late October. :p
