A Toledo Blade editorial states the Obama is the true Pro-Life Candidate...
This really good stuff. The author is Richard R. Gaillardetz who is a professor of Catholic studies at the University of Toledo.

We have had 20 years of Republicans in the White House who ran on the 'anti-
Roe v. Wade' slogan, and nothing has changed.

The true 'pro-life' candidate is the one who is supporting social policies proven to reduce abortions, policies that would extend substantial financial and health-care assistance to poor families facing unplanned pregnancies.

The true pro-life candidate is the one who has also emphasized pregnancy prevention and the need for fathers to take greater responsibility for unplanned pregnancies.

There is a pro-life candidate out there — and it turns out he's a Democrat!

This is huge because stuff like this gives Catholics some moral justification for coming home and voting for Democrats again...

I'm getting all choked up here. I'm actually typing this through tears. The religion I grew up with, loved as a child and a young adult, left me in the lurch. I can only hope they are coming back to a sane, realistic approach to religious. I only hope I can one day return to the church that turned it's back on me and me and so many others like me.

3. That's a beautiful endorsement. It's so true.
I have faith in the Catholic community, which so often really does do 'the Lord's work.'

I remember when the Republicans drove a wedge between Catholic people and John Kerry because of his stand on reproductive rights. It was one of the very lowest points in US political history. I'm so very glad to hear prominent Catholics speaking up.

Thank you for sharing.

5. Absolutely true.
Pro-ALL life.

Pro-life means standing up for people with terrible injuries or illness and no health insurance.

Pro-life means standing up for people who are losing their homes or might not be able to pay their heating bills in a cold winter. Who have nowhere to go after a hurricane. Who are living in their cars after losing jobs.

Pro-life means standing up for elderly people who are lonely and have no family and are poor. And for babies already born to the jobless and poor and those who are just kids themselves.

Pro-life means never, never, ever sending soldiers into war unnecessarily, and if you truly must, making sure to give them everything they need--including health care, physical and mental--for a DECENT life when they come home.

I could go on but we all know what I mean.

6. How good to see this editorial...
Sanity may actually be returning to our thinking about abortion.

This is a huge step in the right direction...

Thank you for sharing this ...

8. Amen!!!
I want us to co-op this term "pro-life" because it sure doesn't describe anti-abortionists who, on the whole, don't give a shit about any living being beyond fetuses.

11. I can hardly wait to see what happens...
...when Gaillardetz attempts to receive communion this morning.

When another prominent "pro-life" Roman Catholic endorsed Obama in, I believe, Massachusetts, his priest spent the entire sermon denouncing him from the pulpit, then refused him communion in front of the entire congregation.

I wouldn't be surprised to see the same thing happening to the writer in a few hours. "Pro-lifers" in the Church want to make this the non-negotiable issue -- that, no matter what other positions candidates may have, Roman Catholics must, in every instance, vote for the candidate who will outlaw abortion. All else is irrelevant. :eyes:

I've been telling other Catholics that I do vote prolife, each and every time I vote for a Democrat. It is why I vote for Democrats.
