The House Republicans May Agree To Bailout In Order To Try To Get Economy Off Everyone's Mind
Edited on Sun Sep-28-08 12:49 AM by Median Democrat
The John McCain camp is dead if the economy continues to deteriote at the same rapid speed it has over the past two weeks. Worse, based on stories in the Washington Post and Politico, John McCain almost singlehandedly screwed things up by trying to swoop in on Thursday with that little stunt of his, then refusing to stand up to the House Republicans by telling them he would back the bailout when Obama asked him point blank in the White House whether or not McCain supported the deal. McCain kept silent, then everything fell apart, and word is leaking out about John McCain's personal role in screwing things up for a political stunt.

So, what can the Republicans do to save McCain's shot for the Presidency? They can pass the bailout to avert the immediate crisis, and pray that the fanancial sector does not continue to meltdown. If the economy slows its deterioration, then McCain has a chance to try to distract the voters once again with non-issues like Paris Hilton ads and lipstick. Heck, perhaps even have a State wedding for Palin's daughter. In other words, if people are fearing that we are about to slide into depression, people are not going to care about McCain's next stunt.

However, if McCain can at least slow the decline so that it is a glide in a recesssion, rather than a crash, than McCain and Rove can continue their brand of bullshit politics and turn the election into a contest of who you would rather have a beer with or shag?

So, ironically, while McCain initially tried to hold up a deal so that he could swoop into DC, and take credit for the deal in a White House photo-op, which lead to McCain screwing up the deal, now McCain needs to clean up the mess he created so that he has a chance of winning, or voters will be too worried about their financial livelihood to be concerned with McCain's superficial attacks.

1. I hope that no Democrats vote for this bill until McCain does.
Even if McCain is out of town, they need to wait for him to come to DC and vote for it before they do.

The bill is a policy mistake, but voting for it without McCain doing so first would also be a political mistake.

2. That makes ZERO sense. The entire House will vote on it before McLame ever sees it.

7. OK, no Democratic Senators should vote for it before McCain...
...and no House Democrats until 90% of House Republicans vote for it.

(Ideally, no one would vote for the bill.)

3. If they think this bill passing will take people's focus off the economy...
They're nuts. That is EXACTLY what the election is about now. Obama will and should not stop pressing that issue.

4. Of Course Obama Will Address The Economy - He's Always On The Issues
However, an issue oriented campaign hurts McCain, so expect more lipstick and pig moments once the slide into depression is averted or at least slowed.

6. Had lunch with a few Freddie Mac people today...
Sitting with two accountants, I overheard one tell the other that one of the former big wigs had told him weeks ago that the action would depend on the polls. If the Republicans thought McCain had no chance, they would take no action and let Obama deal with it. If the race was close, they would try to take care of it so as not to leave a mess for McCain.
Also, the $7 kazillion does not include Freddie and Fannie. They did not take as many chances as some of the others. The bail outs are for their riskier competitors. Freddie and Fannie may not need any monitary assistance.
