What does the lack of bumper stickers mean??
An interesting observation from my usually heavily-Republican area:

There are practically NO cars with McCain bumper stickers. In 2000 (and 2004), it seemed like every car had a "W" sticker on it, which really got on my nerves. This year, however, I can count the number of McCain stickers I've seen on one hand.

What do you suppose that means?

  • Republicans aren't voting for McCain

  • Republicans are ashamed to admit they're voting for McCain

  • The bumper sticker craze is over

Despite the lack of McCain stickers, there aren't many Obama stickers, either...although I've seen more Obama ones.

3. Here in Cincinnati, Ohio
I always see lots of Obama stickers everywhere I drive. I've only seen two McCain bumper stickers altogether.

This is very different from 2004 when there were a lot more Bush Cheney stickers. In fact, I've seen more old Bush-Cheney stickers in the past two weeks than I've seen McCain stickers.

The Akron/Canton area which seemed chocked full for W stickers four years ago. I have seen maybe two or three McCain stickers since the primaries started.

I've also probably have seen about 5 McCain yard signs to 30 Obama signs.

and now she is afraid of putting her Obama magnetic stickers back on her car. She is afraid of someone doing something worse to her when she is driving down the road. This world is crazy.

Edited to add: there are mccain stickers here. One was a whole cover on the spare wheel of a SUV. We are in a repub controled country even if there are liberals represented here. Very few Obama stickers, but a few. And this is still Illinois.

Reports of cars with Dem stickers being keyed, smashed or just their drivers yelled at have convinced me to just not put a sticker on my car.

Anyway, I drive a Toyoto ECHO, it's not hard to realize I am not a Dem.

I also have an Avalanche but my wife uses it to pull her mobile grooming trailer, or else we'd have a van.

zip, zilch, zero bumper stickers or signs for the Maverick and his mate. I've seen a handful of Obama stickers and Ron Paul stickers. I've seen a handful of local politician's stickers. There were a handful of Huckabee stickers during the primaries and a ton of Ron Paul stickers and sings but no McCain/Palin stickers or signs.

At this stage during the 2004 elections, the bush had sings and stickers everywhere. They were on barns, on outhouses, on tool sheds, in yards and stuck to every good Republicon bumper.

But a few Obama stickers are on bumpers and a few Obama yard signs grace the country roads.

But the elusive McCain/Palin stickers and sings are no where to be found. They are as elusive as big foot. I wonder why?

There simply are NO McHoover stickers around...and, yeah, Calif is heavy Obama territory...but in 2004, I sure as hell did not see only 2 Bush bumperstickers at this stage of the process. There were a lot of them back in 2004 by the September before the election.

22. I don't think these 2 things are connected.. The lack of McCalin stickers is because the
enthusiasm is low. People will say they support him if asked but not strongly enough to put a sticker on their car or a sign on their lawn

Obama on the other hand seems to run out of lawn signs and stickers. I know Move-on.org was giving away stickers and ran out. There also have been multiple posts here about people not being able to get an Obama sign. I know I couldn't get my sticker from Move-on and I am still waiting for my Obama Biden T-shirt that I should get because I donated more than thirty bucks, on the day the Biden picked was announced. Even the text message about the VP pick was such a big deal they couldn't get to everyone with it.

My take on this is that the Obama campaign is sending stickers and signs to the areas where they will do the most good. We saw in the primaries that these guys can mine votes in very specific areas, I think that is what they are doing with all their resources. Even stickers, signs and T-shirts.

25. Similar situation here. But lots of Obama stickers.
Back in 2004, here in inland southern California, there were those little oval W stickers everywhere you looked. Kerry stickers were few and far between. Fast forward to 2008 and the exact opposite is true. Everywhere I look, I see Obama stickers. Sometimes they'll be a row of them lined up in traffic. And there are even fewer McCain stickers than there were Kerry stickers in 2004. I've counted three McCain stickers in the last four months or so. Obama stickers....I lost count months ago.

I don't know what it means, but I have to assume it's good, whatever it is. :bounce:

Until very recently, there were still a lot of Chimpy stickers on SUVs and pickup trucks. This is the south.

Even in very high-income neighborhoods full of Republican retirees, there are many more Obama yard signs and bumper stickers than McCain. Very very few McCain stickers or signs.

I would say that people are embarrassed by McCain, and especially embarrassed by Palin.

There are cars here still seemingly proudly displaying Bush/Cheney 04 stickers. I have seen fewer than half a dozen McCain stickers in the last couple of weeks, but the number of Obama stickers appears to be increasing. I have seen several Obama yard signs and NO McCain yard signs.

When you consider that I live in a red neighborhood in a red city in a red state, that's pretty telling. (Of course, complicating matters here is that there is a huge LDS population here, and there is probably still some anger/disappointment over McCain's failure to choose Romney as his running mate).

I've seen few stickers from either side. Last two presidential elections there were tons of W stickers in my red area of town. This time around I think I've seen about an equal number of Obama stickers the rare times I've seen any at all. I've seen no Obama yard signs, and a couple McCain signs. I've seen one Bob Barr sign. ETA I think I'd see a lot more Obama stickers and signs, but people in this area are afraid of vandalism. I think the thread is worse this time around because McCain know they're probably going to lose, and are angry.

38. Bumperstickers are expensive.
On the Obama site, they cost as much as buttons; on www.democraticstuff.com they cost MORE than buttons. I don't remember them being as high 4 years ago.

Here in Maryland, they are also scarce. As are yard signs. But, I think the offices are starting to carry them, so if you have an Obama office near you, you should be able to get one, and give it away if you already have one.

However, I also admit that fewer people want them on their cars, even though this year's are "easily removed".

If they are supporting McCain/Palin in large numbers, it's a pretty sure bet that they're not nearly as entusiastic about it as they were in 04. I really think we're going to see a rather large number of Republicans voting Obama this cycle.

My job has me on the road all the time. On a recent run of driving down the highways of over a dozen states (many of them red), I counted 48 Obama stickers, and ZERO McCain. (I also counted 3 old Bush/Cheney).

I'm heading into the South next week and will continue counting. I still have yet to see a McCain sticker though!

The states I went through on that 48-0 count: SC, NC, VA, MD, DC, DE, PA, NJ, NY, CT, RI, MA, IL, IA, WI, MN, SD, ND, NE.

49. Few Obama bumper stickers, signs, posters have been available.
People have been constantly begging for Obama yard signs, posters, bumper stickers, etc. for the last 8 months in PA. The first yard signs just arrived at one local Obama office - but the other offices don't have any. They are using the few bumper stickers and buttons that they have received as fundraisers.

People say don't try to buy stuff from the official Obama website, because they are so backed up. A local volunteer recommended www.demstore.com.

54. There's a distinct lack of political signage out anywhere here.
Repub or Dem, I haven't seen many lawnsigns or bumperstickers this time around.

I've seen more Ron Paul stuff than McSame until recently.

I saw my first McSame bumper sticker today - white lady doing 45 in a 55 zone where most people do 60. Regular sedan; NC plates.

I've seen 5-6 McSame lawnsigns around Burlington and Elon, no Obama. And one on US-70 by my house, between Greensboro and... Burlington.

I've seen plenty of Obama stickers on cars in the Greensboro area, and 2-3 lawnsigns.

Earlier in the year I saw a Nobama sticker. In Burlington.

But Burlington NC must be a target area for Repukes this year... there's a guy who has bought a good number of cable-tv ads against House Senator Tony Foriest, and that's only because Time Warner Cable will run the ads system-wide.

What's interesting is that Obama has his office in downtown Greensboro; McSame have avoided Greensboro and are in High Point.

Mark.

57. Today I was at our local Obama HQ and they were OUT
of bumper stickers. I have one spare one that I keep in my car in case I run into someone (not literally of course) who wants one. Unfortunately today I didn't have my car.
But anyway, if the offices are running out, and main HQ is so far behind in getting supplies and sending them out... well maybe that's a good thing.

58. Same here in East Tennessee.
I'm shocked at how few McCain bumper stickers I've seen. And I don't think I've seen any McCain/Palin stickers. I've seen some for Obama, and one for Ron Paul just a few weeks ago, heh.

60. I asked this question of a Raleigh McCainiac and he said he did not want to have his car attacked.
He said when Obama told folks to "get in their faces", he assumed it meant to attack McCain supporters.

I am not sure how to process this data point...

63. in my town ... in my state ...
the company i work for is family owned, and the whole family has mccain stickers
i've seen a few on the streets (about 1 for every 4 or 5 obama stickers)
i see more ron paul banners than mccain yard signs
i see obama tshirts everywhere (not 1 mccain shirt yet, though one hat on the boss one day)
however, i do see the name mccain everyday ... i go past his office in phoenix to go to work.
even here, the word on the street leans obama

maybe ... just maybe ... http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=132&topic_id=7220551&mesg_id=7220551

69. Maybe people are tired of using semi-permanent adhesive to attach a sticker that will soon be dated

to an expensive vehicle.

OR, it could just be that McCain sucks.

I've seen many more Obama stickers round here than McCain stickers :)
