You can see it in the epic collapse of the McCain campaign, flailing and panicked, rewarded by ever plummeting poll numbers. You can see it in Palin's treatment among Republicans -- once triumphant, now embarrassed as they stash her away in Cheney's undisclosed location, afraid to let her see the light of day lest people decide that she's an even bigger moron than they already think she is.
Heck, did you see the debate, how McCain got some of his best dial poll numbers (on CNN) when he attacked his own party? As much as Democrats didn't like all the "I agree with John" references from Obama, note that he almost always said that after McCain had attacked his own party. The GOP features a standard bearer who is desperately trying to distance himself from Republicans. That doesn't do much for their brand, and their party's desperation grows by the day.
You can even see it in the tightening of races where we have pre- and post-bailout numbers. Take the Kentucky Senate race, for example. Look at the numbers before September 19th, and then the ones after. And if Mitch McConnell -- one of the most powerful and well-funded Republicans in Congress is in trouble, you can bet his minions are also in similar trouble.
As James Carville famously said, "When your opponent is drowning, throw the son of a bitch an anvil." We have a chance here to give our best candidates the resources to put the serious hurt on the foundering GOP. We are on the verge of breaking this thing open. Now is now the time to hold back. This is it, the end game.
Look, almost everyone has at least $10. If that's all you can do, pick one candidate from our Orange to Blue ActBlue fundraising page (or any other candidate off it) and drop them that ten-spot. If you've got more, spread it around a little bit more. Pick two or three of your favorites. Dig deep. Don't hold back. The time to slack and procrastinate is over.
We're on the verge of a massive, historic victory. But it ain't gonna happen unless we all commit.
Right now, as I write this, there are about 1,000 contributors to our end-of-quarter push. We have an audience in the million-range. Many of you have stepped up in other races we haven't featured, or have already reached your contribution limits, or are helping in other ways. But I bet there's a huge number of you, way too large, who haven't taken that next step of engagement by contributing to a campaign. The business community isn't shy about giving. That's why they've bought so many politicians. The more regular Americans engage, the less our elected officials need the business PACs.
There are few excuses for not giving. If you want a progressive America and better Democrats in Congress (as well as one in the White House), you've got to step up. Give that first $10. Or $20. Or $100. It'll feel good.
It's time to join the thousands of us who have committed financially for a better America. Give now.
It's time to throw drowning Republicans a big frackin' anvil.
