Keep in mind that I said down market

War Hero: commander of allied forces in Europe = POW from a quagmire of a military venture
Highly partisan running mate: vicious, but very intelligent red-baiter = vicious and not very intelligent religious fanatic

Keep in mind that I said down market

1. Down market. Gotcha.
VERY down market.

Then there was Nixon-Agnew--the red-baiter and the rabid wolverine.

2. Waaay down market
Like bargain basement closeout sale.

Remember, John Eisenhower and his daughter Susan are for Obama--that says LOADS to a lot of older Republicans like my mom.

3. I was thinking the same thing today...
Historical comparisons like this can quickly go too far, but what I was trying to remember was Eisenhower's connection to Nixon. I have a vague memory that the VP choice was put on Ike by the rw conservatives and that he didn't like Nixon, never gave him power, and never gave him respect. If no one else remembers, I'll look it up.

Checkers and troopers.

4. You are correct...
Nixon was a significantly younger running mate who Eisenhower was forced to accept on the ticket.
Nixon and Palin share the viciousness, but, unlike Palin, Nixon was highly intelligent.

5. Nixon was showy partisan, definitely right wing.
But he wasn't stupid. Evil at times, paranoid, ambitious, cunning, but few called him stupid. Didn't recall religion more than the typical church on Sunday thing.

He had federal experience before the VP nomination and was comfortable in federal circles, unlike Palin.

6. I have repeated numerous times that Nixon was very smart (unlike Palin)
I have read all of his post presidency books, but I don't think I will ever bother with Palin's bible story coloring book :)

7. Check this out...eerie

http://www.livingroomcandidate.org/commercials/1952/nixon-on-corruption

The Republican campaign theme for the year was "It’s Time for a Change."

He had four years in the House and two in the Senate before the nomination and the corruption charges that followed. Nixon saved himself with the checkers speech, of course. Poor dog, if you think you have a bad life, just think of checkers. "I'm Nixon's dog, fuck." That's bad.

Most of the quick-to-check sites zero in only on the speech, so I'll see if I have a biography around here. Seems to me there were some interesting convention maneuvers that put him in play. He had a rising-star reputation because of his HUAC and Hiss inquisition.
