This is quite remarkable. NC should have been a solid McCain state. Obama's far and wide state strategy is working. It's now Obama/Biden: 301 McCain/Palin: 237

Traitorous b*stards will do anything, as we know from the dirty tricks of the 2000 and 2004 presidential elections. They'll program the cheat (voting) equipment, interfere with voting in Dem precincts, hire people to write stupid chit on Dem message boards - anything. It's pathetic really.

Edited to add: But we're not putting up with another steal - uh uh, no way in hell.

We do after all, have a history of voting for Democratic governors (most of who have not been DINOs). Of course Obama and his campaign have been working their collective asses off to win the state, and for that I salute them. Too bad most past Democratic candidates all but ignored the state - who knows what could have happened.

40. **** Check this out about NC's newly registered voters: ****
Edited on Sun Sep-28-08 04:48 PM by Lex
With the presidential election only two months away, North Carolina political parties are in a fight to the finish to capture the state's changing electorate.

Although Republicans have successfully courted 36,000 newly registered voters this election cycle, Democrats have added 167,000 residents to their voter rolls in the traditionally red state.

"We were under no illusions going into 2008 that it was going to be anything other than easy," said Brent Woodcox, spokesperson for the North Carolina Republican Party.

"We were under no illusions going into 2008 that it was going to be anything other than easy," said Brent Woodcox, spokesperson for the North Carolina Republican Party.

I don't think this means what he thinks it means! He basically just said that they thought it was gonna be a cake walk.

Maybe I'm misreading his convoluted phrasing, but if what he meant was that "we always knew this wasn't gonna be easy," shouldn't he have said "we were under no illusions ... that it was going to be anything other than tough"? Anyone else able to speak Repug?

50. As another North Carolinian...I feel that's a limited view
Sure, there are people like that, but there are certainly a lot of people who aren't.

I say changing. NC has tons of good universities and the number of educated people are growing.
A changing economy is attracting immigration (from outside of the US and from the North).
The state is also diversifying ethnically and religiously with the new immigrants.

The 3 "metro" areas (Charlotte, the Triad (Winston-Salem, Greensboro, High Point) and the Triangle (Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill)) are also growing quickly.

65. insider tells me
there's LOTS of support for Obama around Fort Bragg....the soldiers are from everywhere and have not enjoyed their multiple tours in Iraq so much

There are a lot of new residents in NC--not all liberals, so I don't buy that they're saving NC from red state hell

Smokers, don't know any, so can't say

A lot of churchgoers are black in NC & not all white church people in NC are fundies

Tons of conservative businesspeople around Charlotte, but maybe they aren't doing so well under the Bush Regime. Possible the smarter ones quietly flipping.

Possible that some Bush supporters on lower incomes are finally getting the picture...the slop is running out at their end of the trough...

just a few trends--including the trend to cleaner elections, which is helping....

Where I live, Asheville, there are many transplants, who are (IMO) on the progressive side. When we first moved here, ten years ago, I was worried that we wouldn't "fit in". I was born in Glendale, Calif. and until recently, lived in the LA area all my life. Fortunately, I've been very surprised and happy with this area's progressiveness. I do admit, however, that the rural areas seem to be mired in a more rigid type of thinking----but I want to have hope for change!

There are 3 veterans groups that score votes. Most recently

Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America
Obama received a B+
John McCain received a D.

Disabled American Veterans
Barack Obama 80%
John McCain 20%.

Vietnam Veterans of America
Barack Obama 14/15
John McCain 9/25.

Obama cares about veterans. If they knew this...
Also those enlisted in Iraq are heavily for Obama per donations

smokers
That should be obvious. His wife made him quit but they have a buddy.

church people
Which of them is better at living up to the teachings of Jesus

I've bet on McCain several times this weekend to win North Carolina. Playing it below 60 is a steal.

This is typical euphoria by people who don't bet. You get short term trends each way, then eventually reality prevails. Right now we're at a pro-Obama stretch that is impacting the state polls and even the state odds. I'm thrilled to take advantage.

It's one thing to narrow the gap. Quite another to get over the top.

59. Their red line/blue line graph shows Obama within 10.8 points in TX!!
Edited on Sun Sep-28-08 06:34 PM by rainbow4321
Put your cursor on the end of the blue line and you will see 9/26 polling results. Obama 38 McCain 48.8

http://www.realclearpolitics.com/epolls/2008/president/tx/texas_mccain_vs_obama-628.html

Most likely the poll doesn't capture all the new voters signed up since the primaries (registration goes thru Oct 6th, also) and those with "cell phones only", etc...

What I would give to hear on Election Night "Texas--still to close to call"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Compare this 10 point span to that of chimp's in 2000 and 2004--21 and 23 point spread

73. Considering the latest major events, these polls are essentially obsolete.
I am convinced the next batch of polls will have Obama ahead in both OH and FL.

77. We may or may not win NC at the end, but we WILL make McCrazy blow his wad there...
Instead of other places where we're in more danger. Thus, the true significance of this lies in how solid OH and other battleground states will be in the coming weeks.
