I think it's fair to say that books like "The Obama Nation" haven't worked. |
|
That is, trying to define Obama negatively to impact the election. Last time I checked, Obama is doing very well.
It would be nice to think this tactic will be discredited in the future.

6. The tactic won't be discredited... but the type of strong response the Obama campaign made... |
|
...is another story. They didn't repeat the mistake of the Kerry campaign, yet instead fought back on the allegations made by the book and had surrogates and Media Matters people out there putting out the smoke before the smoke ever had the chance to turn into all out flames.

16. Obama put out a 41 page report of lies in it within one day |
|
- Kerry put out a 36 page report of lies with in one day. Obama had surrogates out there immediately, Kerry had suggogates out there immediately. (Kerry is criticized for not being out there Day 1 himself and not making ads on it - both things that Obama did not do this time.)
The differences
- the media mostly worked with us to call the obama lies what they were, in 2004, they gave millions of dollars worth of free time to the SBVT and refused to cover Kerry's speech where he refuted it. Large parts of teh media engaged in a media assassination in 2004.
- The people who wrote the book in 2004, made ads and had a group of disgruntled vets, likely angry over how the swiftboat mission was portrayed in Brinkley's book or Kerry's anti- Vietnam protest who pushed it. Neither of these things happened this year.

15. From a bookseller's point of view |
|
A lot of our older booksellers at my store (big, big, big damn store in Lexington... you may know the one I mean and it ain't Barnes and Noble) remember 2004 all too well, when we did not have "Unfit For Command" in stock. They caught hell from the local wingnuts. So the bosses decided, for the protection of their booksellers, to ordered a ton of Corsi's latest bit of logorrhea. It sold a little bit. Now it's a dead fish, not moving AT ALL. Coming soon to a remainder table near you... right beside the astoundingly fatuous "Giuliani: Flawed or Flawless?" (Which we sold no copies of at all!)
Audacity of Hope, on the other hand, has done really well. And this is in Kentucky!

21. Let me tell ya... we ALL hate that book. |
|
Almost all of us - from the boss on down - are sick of looking at that thing. Almost every single one of us is liberal as all get out. (One or two aren't, but there's room for everyone, I guess.) But we will *gladly* take their money. ;) And we will all tell you - the most obnoxious customers BY FAR are the right-wingers. Nobody gets their knickers in a twist as bad as those guys at every imagined slight. And we all agree - nobody is buying that book that doesn't already agree with everything in it. Corsi hasn't changed any minds. (Nor have the other crudely produced knock-offs, like "Obama Unmasked" and "The Case Against Barack Obama", equally non-selling books.)
There was one time that I caught a little hell as a bookseller from a non-righty, and it was a Hillary fan during the last primaries. But even though I was an Obama guy I happily hooked her up with a few good books about Hillary, steered her away from the hit pieces, talked to her nicely for a while, soothed her concerns, and she left happy (and spent like fifty bucks, too.) Fellow Democrats - even ones not supporting my candidate - are going to get nicer treatment from me even if they start out breathing fire. Right-wingers who are trying to give us hell get the "I'm sorry you feel that way" treatment. If only I could find a way to tell them they were taking us out of context, I'd have hit the GOP double. ;)
I should also point out that we put a big display of "The Wrecking Crew" at eye level, while we stuck Corsi at about knee level on the same shelf. Small rebellions, you know.

18. I have a recent email from an old friend that says otherwise. |
|
I had sent out an email to many friends right after Sarah Palin's appearance at the RNC and she responded to me with "Obama is a wolf in sheep's clothing!" I asked her why she would say such a thing and this is what I received back:
:puke:
"Well (my name inserted here) let me tell you! Don't you have any questions in your mind regarding his ex-pastor, first of all? If one can brush that one under the table with a full understanding of the LONG relationship they had (from what has been in the media ) then one must be blind and deaf. The only reason Obama cut him off is because it was jeopardizing his position! Obviously I don't know him personally but there is no way I would have EVER stayed in that church. So clearly he and his wife agreed with at least most of the stuff that was being taught there. And I don't buy the story that all black churches are just "like that" as I have heard said. He continues to have strong Muslim ties and he cannot deny it. Secondly, he currently belongs( and I believe his father also) to an African tribe that basically is a terrorist group in Africa. The book called "The Obama Nation" reveals much of these hidden dark secrets that most people don't know about him. But more importantly than that, I honestly don't believe the man cares at all about this country. I think his agenda is a pretty short list catering to the blacks and minorities and his personal interests. And I gotta say, that scares the heck out of me! Living where I do (she lives in Arizona) which is the HUB of illegal immigration has slowly eaten away at me. I see these darn minority groups getting all sorts of free services and benefits that I don't get because I am a WASP!- I often feel like a stranger in my own country here and he would only make the problem worse. And he has changed his mind often and still said absolutely nothing with substance in my opinion. I could go on but I don't want to sound like I am preaching nor am I some authority on him. I only know that deep in my soul I see that he is not who he claims to be OR his wife for that matter. I am not crazy about our republican candidate but I love Sarah Palin. I think SHE should run for president! She embodies everything that America was built on why America became great in the first place!---- "
